Momma Dora Bored?

Hi all,

My dear Momma Dora is doing great. Even though it started out bumpy with Boxer, they are now good friends and greet each other with head licks often. Since she's so much yonger (probably by 7 years) than Boxer and Sophie, they don't like to play as much as she does.

The spend a lot of time looking out the back door together, where the birds and squirrels feast on peanuts and seed all year round, but she's also entertained by batting corks and playing with her toys, during which she's pretty much on her own.

Usually Momma doesn't try to get out, but lately while I am feeding the outside critters, she noses the inside door open (the screen door keeps her from escaping) and looks as if she will go out if I'm not quick enough. This morning she was scratching at the window, and also under the door. The temps have been more mild this week too.

She's indoors for good as far as I'm concerned, but could she be looking to get out because she remembers and wants to 'play' with the birds and squirrels...or is she just bored?

My cats have always been indoor cats, and as soon as the weather starts to get nicer and more mild - and all the furry 'friends' come out, they try to get out. Infact my eldest bolted and flopped on her tummy just outside the door just this morning.

I think a bit of it may be boredom, but I think a lot of it has to do with their drive to chase and catch prey. They see all these tasty fun things outside, it's warm, etc -

But, I think it's just something they have to learn to live with. We do let our oldest outside with us in the summer sometimes, she doesn't leave the yard, and we don't let her out for too long, but it seems to be enough that she gets her fix.

If the cat REALLY wants to go outside you might consider taking her out on a leash. I adopted a cat in June and although she is an indoor-only cat she really wanted to go outside. I got a harness and leash and she loves it. Sometimes we poke around the yard but other times she walks around the neighborhood for blocks. I think it is good for them to get out and experience the real world, it relieves any boredom plus it is good for you, too. It also drives the neighbors nuts! The cat owners will be jealous that your cat walks on a leash and the non-cat owners have never even heard of it. You will get some funny double-takes.

That is a good idea, did the same with Bindi.

    Hi Sue,

I'm glad to hear Moma Dora is doing good. Ruby say's "Hi".
Ruby hasn't tried to get out of the house yet, but it's still cold here in Michigan. Once it warms up, it may be a different story, but she will 'not' be going outside this year. Not after what I went through to save her feral butt!

I hear you Mindy. My Momma is too loved to let her go out again. I am fearful of using a leash, since she may revert to her frantic ways outside, and I wouldn't want her to get away from me with the leash still attached.

We'll see how it goes. She is a smart girl and has to know that she has it way better on the inside than she did on the outside!

I would think not, Useally cats probably don't know about outdoor dangers until its to late, or until something really awful happens like breaking a leg, ect.

Bindi still tries to get out, but after seeing that dead white and black cat by my job site at the side of the road last winter, with faint traces of blood on its head, nope indoors only.
