Help with a kitchen 'poof'

Hi everyone - hope you are all having a wonderful Valentines Day :)

I was wondering if anyone can help in my search for a "poof" (well in England we would call it a poof) for a dining table.

As you may know, I live on a small island and need to buy everything sight unseen via the internet. We are finished with the kitchen remodel (well all but the cabinet trim) and are getting ready to embark on a major "rest of the home" remodel and will be shipping a container again from Florida. As we have such limited space I am looking to find what I call a poof for our (almost) in the kitchen dining table - my idea is to have banquet seating and then on the other side of the small table use a poof so it will be able to tuck totally under the table and not take up any space and will only be used on rare occasions as I know they are probably not the most comfortable. I think what I am looking for is an ottoman but are those high enough ? As I currently don't have a dining table and there is no store where I can go and measure chairs can anyone tell me what height I should be looking for - is it 18"h - I assume the banquet should be 18" high (don't know where I got that number from probably on HGTV somewhere) so please correct me if I am wrong. Does anyone know of a great website that has what I am looking for - is it indeed an ottoman and should I be looking at them in a 18" height and will any ottoman work?

Thanks everyone for all of your help.

Pia

ps: am I right with the banquet being 18" high.

Are you thinking upholstered as opposed to all wood or metal? The other day I was skimming bar stools and found they come in various heights. You don't want a chair because it won't slide under the table?

    What about Emeco stools?

Isn't a poof like an ottoman...or a footstool? If it's high enough to use as a chair, that would be cute! :)

I have been looking all over for an oversized bench (appx 44" wide) for my bathroom vanity, and I have learned this ... if you are sitting on it, it is more rectangular than square and it is higher than 17". Then it is usually called a bench.

If it is more square and low, it is usually an ottoman.

Lee Industries and Calico Corners are two companies that make benches custom, for about $1000 depending on fabric. You may want yours on casters.

Also try Ballard Designs, West Elm, Pottery Barn, Rest HW, Anthropologie, Wisteria, MGBW. You may want to do slipcovers so you can easily wash them

PS you must tell us at least what body of water your lil' island is on, while I sit here still snowbound. Or at least snow-impaired.

Piaa, no answer to your question, but did you ever post your finished kitchen? I wondered what happened to you.

Hi Prill - yes we did finish all but putting the trim on the upper cabinets but that will have to be in our next container as the one I ordered was sooooo wrong :)

I did post my finished photos in a thread but for the life of me I can't find it here - I searched my name, St John, soapstone, etc etc but nothing comes up ......hummm do we have pages missing again? I think it was back in November maybe October? I'll see if I can find it and post the link but I'm not having any luck :(

Piaa!! So nice to hear from ya girl. Don't want to make you jealous or anything, but it is going up to 65 here on Friday!!! Break out the hot pants & tube tops! lol

Not that this helps, unless you get to the States and find yourself at a HomeGoods....but I've seen them in really groovy bright colors, shag too!

    Check eBay, lots there too.

crate and barrel, has one 16" high

I must have missed it! The kitchen threads move so fast, if you miss a couple of days you're lost!

I can catch up on your blog... haven't checked that in quite a while either. You must be so happy to be there when you see the great weather in the U.S. this winter!!

Thanks for the welcome - I have been here with all of you but more of a "lurker" as I really can't really help anyone due to lack of experience and you are all sooooooo fabulous :)

Still having no luck finding my thread :( (but I'll keep looking)

    Hi.

Serena & Lily have some cute ones in great fabrics, but small. And pricey.

I also saw some large, custom ottomans on Maine Cottage. Great fabric choices.

    Enjoy the sun.

I'm glad Dawn_T found your thread. It was not "lost" nor are we missing pages...it had dropped off the last page (page 67) b/c no one had posted to it in approx 6 weeks. That's how long it takes for threads to drop off the last page if no one posts to them. Once a thread falls off the last page, you can no longer search for it on GardenWeb. However, by using a Google (or similar) search, you can often find an old thread. (See the "Read Me" thread for more information.)
