My new dog

Here he is! My new mutt ... my vet says he's a "Heinz 57" mutt ... probably some german shepherd, and who knows what else. He has these strange dew claws on his back feet, that she said is typical of Great Pyrneese (sp?). But he's only 55 lbs, and won't get too much bigger than that, just needs to fill out some.

I got him from a rural SPCA. The owners were keeping him and another dog in a barn. They were convinced to surrender them to the SPCA so they could get homes. He's 2 to 3.5 years old, and not sure he's been in a house before he came to mine. Though he's been great about needing to go outside to go potty. Only 2 episodes in that past week, and those were early in the week.

He's very possesive about his food, with other animals. I assume he wasn't getting fed well or regularly. I've learned to feed him first and keep the other animals away from him when he's eating. Hopefully that will pass when he realizes he's getting fed regularly and well.

He's a real sweet heart! Everyone in the neighborhood who has met him thinks he's just great. Very calm ....

He is a handsome fellow, and something tells me he's going to make one of those special companions. I love that little pink slash on his nose. LOL.

He's a handsome and happy looking pup, and wonderful that he found your home! Congrats to both of you. BTW, German Shepherds have rear dew claws, G.Pyrannees actually have double rear dew claws.

He has such a nice shading of color! Lily looks like she is enjoying having a little boy to dominate. Congratulations on your newest family member.

He's a good looking pup. I'll bet he thinks he died and went to heaven after his previous life. That's why rescues are so rewarding.

Congratulations to all of you! I'm LOL at the pic in the chair...they do learn very fast :) As I often tell Daisy, my beagle rescue: "You won the doggie lottery when I adopted you."

He's very beautiful.

The 2nd pic, where his face looks so expressive, reminds me of my Pyranees mix.

I think the gene for "humongous" must be recessive, so when Pyranees are mixed with smaller dogs, you lose that hugeness.

He definitely has some herding in him. His face reminds me a lot of my ginger, a english shepherd.

I noticed that faint "split" he has down his forehead. It is very common for collies and collie-related breeds like the english shepherd or farm collies in sable.

My ginger (below) has some reallllly fat rear dew claws, and I'm forever having to keep them clipped so that they don't grow into her pads.

These are dew claws that flop when he runs .. I've never seen anything like them before.

Cindy, his face does look similar to your ginger.

I'm amazed at how quickly he has made himself right at home!

Pamghatten, my Bina has monster dew claws, too. She is likely a Border Collie or Australian Collie mix. She does not like them touched at all!

I wonder if your Brownie is going to develop longer hair as he ages. Toby, my Beagle/Golden boy did. Our Bina had lots of hair when we got her, but I was fascinated to see it grow and grow and grow. She had been groomed by the rescue and we never expected that she was a really long-haired dog. Really long. Toe hair can get to six inches! Rescue dogs are full of surprises!
It is so funny to hear how easily Brownie slipped into his new life. My three just recently lost their grandpa - who lived with us. Dad's caregivers were here all day with Dad and the dogs, then suddenly the dogs were alone all day. Other than being clingy when I have to go to work, they really have not shown signs of depression. They sometimes sniff at Dad's door, but once I show them that he is gone (and his cookies gone with him), they go about their business. I think that dogs are Buddhists, always in the moment.

What a cutie. He and Lily both look happy in the thrid pic after playing. Isn't it great seeing a rescue dog relax and enjoy their new home. Our male Sheltie heaves a happy sigh after is daily walks, it's so sweet to see how satisfied he seems.
