Crazy dog!

I guess I didn't cure Lola from counter surfing after all. Last week she snatched a chicken sausage off the counter. Tonight I was making asparagus, and when I went to put it in the pot, it was gone. "Hmmm. I'm really losing it," I thought. "I swear I left that asparagus right here on the cutting board."

Then I saw the fat blue rubber band on the carpet. What kind of dog eats raw asparagus?!! (half a pound, I might add!)

"Counter surfing". That is too funny! Does she get all the way ON the counter? We have granite countertops and our island is usually totally clear of anything, but sometimes the cats take a leap and the slick countertop slides them right off the other side. That is what I am picturing Lola doing, but snatching food as she goes!!! Raw asparagus? At least she eats her veggies, and likes expensive ones at that!

This reminds me of the Craig's list "Free To A Good Home" ad.

    MIchelle very funny.

    LOL, that ad was funny!

She doesn't get up on the counter. She is just tall enough to hook her toes on the edge for balance, then reach. Her snout is about 4" long, and tongue probably 3 or 4 more, so anything within 8" of the countertop edge is in danger.

I gave her dirty looks while I ate my broccoli.

LOL, what are other dogs going to think when they sniff that pee mail on walk?

Another use for penny cans. String a line (thread or fishing line) across the counter top attached to penny cans on each end. She will trigger the crashing sounds when she trips the wire.

Been there, done that. Note the update on the photo caption...

That ad is hilarious - sounds like what we would've written about our beagle had we ever given up on her!

Weed - I am not sure if you've ever seen the Ssscat spray cans before?? They work wonders. It detects motion and sprays a harmless spray (compressed air?), but it's the loud, sudden noise that does the trick.

We originally bought it for the cats to stay out of the Christmas tree when we were gone or sleeping, but quickly found out it was even better for the dog. We didn't even have to have it on to spray more than once for her to learn to stay away. Now we just pull it out if she starts to get into anything again - and leave it off and she stays away. We haven't needed it in over a year, for the cats or the dog, though.

Just before you start dinner, give your dog a treat loaded kong....

ladybugfruit - LOL, I was going to mention that, but wasn't sure if anyone would "get it". :)

Munkos - I love it! I used a citronella collar on Daisy to break her from barking her head of on a walk, and it only took 3 times before she stopped.

Mazer - with this dog, that wouldn't make a difference. It's going to be a combo of me being vigilant watching her so I can correct her, and keeping the food more than 8" from the edge...

That's one solution, if you just want to mask the problem. We don't give any sort of treats in our house anymore - no kongs, cookies, nothing. They get dinner and breakfast. So that wouldn't be an option for us.

Weed, when you showed her picture on a previous thread I thought she looked like she had some beagle in her.

Maybe that is a hound nose coming out? If so, look out, those hounds just live for food! LOL!!

Weed, I'm sorry to hear this as we have been using your setup with one of our dogs recently! He's only pulled it down once and it did frighten him. Since then we've left steak on the counter (and he knew it was there) and he didn't touch it. I'm sure it's too much to hope he's cured, but I was quite impressed with the first round!

Yeah, I can't believe I ended up with a dog that might have beagle in her. I swore after I got Daisy I would NEVER have another beagle!

Prarie love, I hope your success continues. I'm currently giving Lola a refresher course. The penny cans are set up again with a tempting bit of cheese. She tried to get it within 5 minutes, but the second she heard the cans start to move she took off. I'm going to set it up daily for a week or so - hopefully that will help imprint "counter=scary" again.

Weed - how old is daisy now??

I remember us swearing up and down that we would never own another hound, (especially a beagle!) the first few years we had Coda. I remember the breeder asking me if I was sure I knew what I was getting into. Oh yeah, read it all, we'll be fine!! How wrong was I! LOL.

But, I'd fill my house with as many beagles as we could now, if I was able to!

Hope Lola learns to keep off the counter!! We've been lucky with the 'counter surfing' she 'table surfs' but we never leave anything at the table.

Weed, I am sorry to remind you that Lola is still a young lady. Your 8 inches will not be 8 inches for long!

Our Toby (Beagle mix) loves asparagus and raw is fine with him.

When I worked in a hospital I found that the photos on the medical charts of peoples' cardiac cath results smelled like asparagus pee.

The other dogs will just think that Lola took a job at a photo lab. ;-)
