Help me break my bedding patterns

I have been using greens and variations on greens in my bedding for as long as I can remember. The color combos change but it always includes a grey sage green.. and usually in the form of a funky quilt paired with a duvet. I've done jacuards, matelasse and floral.

Fast forward to yesterday when the quilt arrived that I had ordered (because it was a good price) before I bought my new dresser and iron bed. It is beautiful-- but oh man it is just more of the same that I've had for the last 25 years and it is rather dark-- not particularly cheery. I was up until 3am trying to find something new and different that would still pull my room together and I am bleary eyed.

So, I am asking for some help-- because at this point I think I may be as influenced by the desperate attempt to "change it up" as by style and fit. Two of the below still tend towards the grey sage color but they are sufficiently different that I am comfortable with them and clearly it is a color that is comforting to me. I have a personal favorite in the group-- but I do like each of the collections below and each brings in some blue which I have never had in the BR.:

Barbara Barry Springtime - this is a bit pricier than I'd like but I love how it is fresh and clean it looks and I like the tc. I am a little concerned that will look silly with my furniture though:

Chandler Collection Serengeti Floral - love the color and pattern and it is the color/mood that I had originally envisioned for the room.

{{!gwi}}

Ralph Lauren Boathouse Floral - I am not sure if you can see, but there are blue flowers in the pattern (delphineum maybe? I am bad with flower names). I LOVE the duvet pattern but would likely pair this with pieces from the coco palm collection. I love the coco palm cream jacquard and the blue ribbon patterns and I am not thrilled with the pink that is paired here.

I have a handful of "also rans" too but these are probably my top three and are pretty representative of the others.

I won't bore you with yet more pictures of the pieces I bought, but there is a large rustic but still feminine 9 drawer dresser and I am having an antique iron bed restored. There are other pieces including a well-worn pine trunk with iron handles. Paint is awaiting a bedding decision. I don't generally name my style because I am a rule breaker by nature ha.. but I am thinking British Colonial-ISH (which in my opinion is all over the board depending on which colony).

I love green too and can't get away from it. I think I would pick the first one since it is mainly white and not overall green. What color are your walls?

I LOVE #3. You could pair it with a matelasse cover, pull out different accent colors (red, blue), lots of options. Can't wait to see your iron bed. We have one in our master bedroom and I love it. I imagine I will always have it. It was purchased about 10 years ago from a company that is no longer in business. They even put a little engraved sign on the rail part (that doesn't show) that has our name and the year we purchased it.

Personally I love the first - it's so fresh and simple. The other two are very similar although the colorways are different - they are busier, more feminine and don't have that fresh feel of the first.

I think all will work with your furniture. I'm not getting a British Colonial-ISH feeling from the 2nd and 3rd bed linens. I'm certain the Barbara Barry bedding is gorgeous and probably has a hefty price tag - I've seen other bedlinens with that same fresh feel at various qualities and price points - so you might want to continue to look around if you love the style but hesitate about the price.

OTOH, you mentioned that the second is the original feel you were going for in the room - it's very pretty.

I have no color on the walls as yet- unless you count very ugly wall paper and plaster. ;)

I love the crisp bright feel of the barbara barry-- but did I mention I have to large dogs who get on the bed? Pottery Barn has a leaf print that is similar-- but nothing has come close to being as pretty imho.

The Ralph Lauren is my favorite-- but I have not seen it in person yet. I do find that sometimes the RL collections look different IRL. I love RL sheets and it's very possible that I can use my current sheets with this set. I like the pop of the lapiz blue color and the red/pink. If I went with this one, I am not sure what color I'd put on the wall though. Would a smokey blue work?

Macy's has both the barbara barry and RL on sale-- they are very similar prices (and both make me choke a little ha). I think it is definitely 1 or 2.. wish I could do both for diff seasons/moods.

Oooooooh, I think #2 is dreamy. Love the colors!

oh.. i meant to say that the RL gives me an east african british colonial feel. I may be way off base on that but that is what came to mind. The Barbara Barry gives me an island british colonial feel. This is based on experience & history though-- not based on any decorator or style rules. I have basically no decorator experience other than making my own crap pieces work together with varying degrees of success.

I like #1 the best. But it is such a light color. Do your dogs go on the bed?

(I have a white duvet with black embroidery in my guest room and it WAS so beautiful.)

When I first read your topic title I was going to suggest drinking less before bedtime. ;)

I like #2 the best, followed by #3. #1 is less traditional and an entirely different feel. Okay if that's what you are going for.

They are all pretty, but my heart fluttered at the RL. And I can see it with the furniture you posted a while ago-- the BC feel, the plantation rocker, wow! A smokey blue would be gorgeous. I am a RL sheet freak and I love their fabrics. I still have a bedskirt from ten years ago by RL and I still love it!

I love the ideas you had for the RL, too.

The first choice would be gorgeous with the BC look, too, but I am afraid it might be difficult to keep white and crisp with dogs, etc. What do you think? What color/finish did you pick for the iron bed? I think that might dictate the overall weight of the color choices for the bedding.

Thank you, Decorpas. Your post came at just the right time to confirm what I think I knew in my heart. The RL took my breath away the first time I saw it. I like the feel and the direction it takes the room.. I also think that it will enhance my furniture rather than just working with it. I know it isn't classic BC but it fits my mental image of where I wanted to go.

I have been second guessing the finish I selected for the bed but I think I made a good decision. I could have gone a lot of directions-- light, rusty, paint chipped, waxed green but I selected a black smythe base with brown and sienna top tones and very subtle gold in the casings. The picture below is a sample of the black with brown tones without the subtle gold tones:

I will get pictures along the way so I can work with them to tweak the finish. It's a custom finish so feel free to give me your thoughts.

I really like the Barbary Barry Springtime. How could you wake up in that bed and not be bright and cheery? Unfortunately, it is completely impractical with the dogs and I am afraid it is a little too cheery for my personality. I'd love it in a B&B but I think it might be too much for my own home.

    Funkyart,

I love your bed finish, and I can see your whole room now in my mind! It's gorgeous. I love the style you are going for-- It's classic and fresh and inviting.

the RL on that bed is TO DIE FOR. You're putting together a gorgeous, "collected" (instead of all bought at same store at same time) feeling room. I can't wait to see it when you're done!

I tried to take my bedroom into a more modern direction, but finally I realized the feel that made me happy and feel at home was the quilt my grandmother made me out of 40's antique fabric (ginghams, florals, etc in light blue, green, salmon...) My RL goes with it perfectly:-)

You inspired me--I am going to repaint my iron bed in that finish you posted! I love it! . Mine is pewter with antiquing right now. Pineapple posts.

Oh thank you, Decorpas!! I am so glad that you can see my vision too. I am not one to have a matched set of anything but I like everything to work in harmony.

I definitely think you should redo your bed! I love pewter but a new finish would look so great with your antique quilt! They are sandblasting my bed-- but I would think a good sanding would work. He said they use acrylics for the top tones-- I'd probably sponge on the warmer tones and then use a soft brush on the pineapple posts with whatever color you want to use as a highlight (if any).

Hmmm... I like the second one best -- provided you don't have a DH to consider. I love the softness of it.

But they are all nice and I'm sure you're going to carry it off beautifully no matter which you pick.

RL is my favorite. But I always head for deeper colors. And always love the accents RL uses, this one lends itself to many other fabric patterns/colors. You can also still keep a fresh look with it.

As for dogs on the bed, me too. But I pull the comforter back and throw a separate blanket on the bed for them which gets washed a bunch.

I love the bed finish. I can't wait to see the whole thing.

    funkyart,

Now I have another project to do! I am so glad you shared your bed finish-- I have been eying this bed for years, not sure what to do. I hadn't yet seen anything that inspired me...

Do you think I could spray paint it the darker color and then do the sponge and brush accents?

I was thinking about your wall color and I also like the idea of a cool, breezy blue in your bedroom. something from the periwinkle flower on the lighter shade. not violet, though. That combo of breezy sky with the warmer tones of the furniture and bedding seems a lovely play on the BC look. It brings to mind the British camped out somewhere (you know the areas better than I) under a tent...linen, leather suitcases, sterling silver tea pots and your bedding:-) Very '20's, is it?

I love all three patterns, but the RL got me for sure. I am a Huge RL fan, and have more sheets and duvets and fabric than I can count. The patterns are just so fun to mix. Every time I try to go through my bedding and get rid of stuff, I just fall in love with it all over again.

I have 35 yards of this fabric (link below) sitting in my basement. Someday I will do something with it, LOL!

I'm enjoying the evolution of your bedroom!!
