The fundamental industry standard for a kitchen faucet set is two holes 8" center to center however:

Faucet sets with a spray attachment generally require a third hole midway between the two holes, thus the sink would have 3" hole which are 8" center to center when measuring between the two outside holes and 4" center to center when measuring from an outside hole to the center hole.

There are specialty sinks that only have one hole.

If in doubt you can take a flashlight and look up under your sink in the cabinet and count the holes to determine if you can install a sprayer type mixer. If you have two hole you cannot install a sprayer. If you have three holes you can.

Additionally;

If you have a stainless steel sink and wanted to install a side spray, soap dispener or RO faucet, and didn't have the holes reuired, typically you can drill the extra holes required to do that. Soap dispensers and side sprays will require one and one half inch (1 1/2") holes and RO, chilled water, insti hot faucets holes should be verified with the manufacturers data. Composite type sinks usually can also be drilled.
