what to do with my attack cat

We found Tabby hanging out in our yard and finally decided to adopt him several months later. He is so loving with us and gets along fine with his "sister".
However, he hates dogs. Tabby is indoors all week but "works" in the garden with me on Sundays. He is always near me or keeping an eye on me from afar. As long as I am inside of our wall/hedged property, he is ok. The other day, I was (first time)outside of the hedge, spraying the weeds. Tabby was sitting under the hedge watching me and along came a woman walking two dogs. He lunged for them and I was so afraid he was going to hurt them so I reached for him and, yes, I am the only one who was injured.

Anyway, when the dogs moved on, he was fine. I am so afraid to let him out now. These dogs were afraid of him but another type of dog could have killed him.

I am thinking of putting a halter and long leash on him. Does this sound like a good idea? I'm not even sure he'll be ok with it. Does anyone have a suggestion on other options?

It might be a good idea. My daughter has a cat who hates dogs and actually has attacked my two dogs by jumping on their backs. Luckily he has no claws so now my dogs don't go in their house because they are very afraid of him. Other dogs might snap his little neck off. Better safe than sorry.

I would put a halter & leash on him or keep him in the house at all times, it's not fair to others if he charges dogs being walked on a leash, one of these days someone may just kicked the poop out of him and you'll no longer have a cat...

Thank you for sharing your experience and opinions.
I was only thinking of a dog that could injure Tabby, but you're right, a person could as well.
He definitely needs to be strapped in a halter and leashed when outdoors.

Question for Lily: Just wondering if your daughter's cat was a stray at one time. At the time we decided to adopt Tabby, our vet said that he is about a year old. We're wondering if that time on the streets caused this behavior.
