Where to start?

We will be doing some remodeling and redecorating over the next year. I know that sounds like a long time but hubby will be doing alot of it and well...need I say more?

Actually he is presently replumbing our 30 year old house.

So we now have holes in the walls where he had to cut into the drywall to get to the pipes. (Same as anyone would have had to do). I had refused to do anything else till that was done.

Our flooring needs replacing. We presently have wall to wall in a Silver color in all rooms but kitchen, breakfact room, laundry room and baths. Tile in the baths will stay - its in great shape and is white with pale gray shadings in two of the baths and white with a pinkish in the third. We will only be putting carpet back in the bedrooms. All the other tile and the carpet in the formal LR, DR, and family room and hallways will be replaced with porcelin tile. Wood or laminate isn't anoption cause of our two dogs whose toe nails would destroy both in no time flat. At least that is what I have been told.

Presently all walls are white, except the family room which has the paneling painted a blue color. We won't be painting all the rooms at one time so I need to figure out what color tile and carpet to get. I have had the gray color scheme (tile in kitchen, breakfast room, laundry), grays in the wall paper in one bath and kitchen, breakfast room has matching border)for 20 years now. Family room furniture has a cremeish gray tone to it. There is a little pink and blue in the kitchen wall paper and and also in the wall paper in the 2nd bath. I don't know if I can convince DH to strip off that wall paper or if I will have to cover over it.

Since I can't afford to do everything all at once, I need to decide what color tile and carpet would be best. Would it be best to look for a 2 tone tile that has grays and beiges if that's possible. What about carpeting? I know that when we paint, it will be either white or just a hint of color. DH refuses to do much color on the walls.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is an older style house that does not have catherdal or higher ceilings. Sure wish it did, but can't change that, I ahve already asked!
