post ER question

so my brother just got his first taste of the vet ER with his sweet Danny. Thankfully Danny is doing better and got sent home this afternoon after an overnight stay for bloody diarrhea and vomiting. I have a fair knowledge of vet medicine for a layperson and was miffed as to why they would send Danny home with the IV cath still in. He left completely hydrated with good blood levels and no instance of bloody diarrhea since this morning. My brother just did what they told him and didn't even ask about that so now they are stuck ( no pun intended) with Danny having an IV in all night ( and you know he is already picking at it). Anyone heard of this and know why they would opt to send him home with it still in??? TIA.

Is Danny still getting fluids at home? Or if he isn't doing better, maybe they wanted him to go to regular vet in the AM, and were trying to save your brother money by leaving in the catheter. If not, they probably forgot to take the catheter out.

No he is not. That's part of what baffled me. That and according to my brother, they were well aware the cath was still in. Danny was doing much better, holding down water and food. That was another thing that kinda didn't set well with me about that ER. He was in for obvious GI issues and they were letting him eat & drink freely. Now I have had and have dogs with sensitive GI's and know that you start small amounts of both to make sure they will hold it down okay. Of course I wasn't there, but my poor brother has never had to deal with anything serious with his dog before and never had to go to the ER. I question if Danny really got the best care. Of course I know most ER vets don't care for me mostly because I ask ALOT of questions. I can make more informed decisions if I know as much as possible. And oftentimes I am researching the minute I get home regarding what the issue/med etc. is.
I would like to think maybe it was just a rough night for the staff, but from what I have heard I am not impressed. Glad I go to another ER.

I would guess, that they expect him to follow up with his regular vet and they may expect that the dog may need more fluids in the near future.

I think you should always follow up with your regular vet after an ER visit, even if its just with a phone call.

In my experience with ER they expect you to follow up with the regular vet. The after-care instructions are usually state what is to be done the next day.
If your regular vet isn't available you can go back to ER for removal of the the IV.

For an animal that was very sick it's not unusual for them to leave the IV in since the animal may crash overnight or get worse the next day. It saves $$ and time for them not to have to put in another IV.

Thanks for the input. I was just upset that they didn't explain better to my brother and with him for not asking questions. I was worried about Danny probably as much as he was. Danny did go to his regular vet for followup yesterday and got the IV removed as well as addressing another issue that I had noticed when I was visiting Saturday. He is still lethargic but seems to be doing a bit better.
I know I am a bit hypersensitive right now as we lost our sweet beagle to cancer 3 weeks ago.
    Thanks again for the input.
