Join your local freecyle. I've been able to give so much of my stuff to freecyclers that I probably would have thrown in the garbage.

I second the Freecycle suggestion - I've gotten rid of lots of old tapes this way. My local library also takes them for their used book sales.

We got rid of all of ours except the family ones, and one of these days SOON I will convert them all to DVD.

Now, if I could just bring myself to do something with our old encyclopedias...

We gave away 2 large boxes of used VHS tapes recently by advertising them on craigslist in the FREE section.

I had a garage sale and sold all my kids' movies at $2 a piece. I made more money off the tapes than anything else.

I sold a set of 30 movies (mostly kid's movies) for $30 recently on craigslist.

If you do not mind paying media rate shipping, there are several units in Iraq who have VCRs in their R&R rooms. And you know they would certainly appreciate any movie- even really really old ones =)

I wouldn't rush to have memorable tape recordings transferred to CD/DVD's. Quality of the data will be lost and the lifespan is much shorter for discs than magnetic tapes.
