on line pet stores

Hi,

I got some 3V Caps for my dog from our local vet and they cost $13.99. I have looked on line and can find the same thing for $7.99. Does any one have an opinion on these internet sites for vitamins and things like frontline? I don't want to get inferior products. The product looks like the same thing but it is hard to imagine such a cost difference. Thanks for your input.

My favorite source for pet and veterinary supplies is KV Vet Supply. Not only do they have an extensive catalog, but their prices are generally the cheapest I've found, and they ship most items free (except heavy items) as long as you meet their minimum order ($50, I think). I've been buying from KV for many years and have never had any complaints about their products or service. They've saved me many thousands of dollars over the years.

I usually order from UPCO. I have never heard of KV Vet supply but I'm going to look and see who is cheaper.

No prescription required for heart meds. Comes from Australia, shipping is super cheap. I order my Frontline plus and heart meds from them. Takes a week to 10 days for delivery.

I sometimes use online pet stores but my vet has asked me to tell him how much a particular thing is on line and he will see if he can match the price and has done so a few times, when he can't he writes me a prescription so I can get it online. So try asking your vet first, it may be easier.

I use petsupliesnet.com also for the frontline plus.I've had no problems thus far.

I remember once I faxed in the form to the vets office to use one of the online pharmacies and they pleaded with me not to do it. They match the best price I could find online... Something about the quality of the meds not being guaranteed... is it true.... who knows. I'd rather buy from the vet as it it give me an excuse to bring the boys in there.

also dogs still should be tested 1x a year or so for heartworm. We usually do this when we buy more meds from the vet. If a dog has heartworm and you give him heartworm meds he can die! We keep our two boys on meds all year long although we do have winter here. The vet still checks them for heartworm every so often.

If vets plead with you not to buy from online vets, and will match their price why don't they match price from the beginning? Mine does the same thing, and I'm thinking why don't you do that from the get-go? (For everyone even if they don't know online dog supplies are cheaper.)

rthummer, that is easy to answer.
The vet wants a higher profit. It is a business and businesses are for making money.

scyrn, Do understand business is for making money. I owned 2 salons for 35 years. I like fair value for fair money. In my industry there are people who take advantage of the customer, doesn't mean I had to follow them. There is a big price range on online vet supplies and your local vet office, and even with the local vets. I check prices and will not patronize the price gouger. Thanks. Do what is fair and right in the beginning is my policy.

I too feel the same way as you! It is too bad that neither of us own a vet practice.
I suppose I would quickly go out of business anyways. I just don't think I could NOT help someone if their animal was sick and they didn't have enough money!

I also suppose that some vets with larger practices get drugs for cheaper than smaller practices. This wouldn't mean that smaller practices are gouging us, it just means they are passing the price on. I go to a smaller practice (only 1 vet) and I do know I pay more money for things. However it is two seconds from my house and I don't have to wait with a billion other people. I just walk in. I doubt my vet could match prices with the larger practices.

scryn, ditto on much of what you said. I don't buy my dog's vet supplies from our vet anymore since I have retired. I have multiple health issues and we have to cut cost. I have to shop around. Also, a retired vet will help us out with some health care for our animals (personal friend) and advice on what we need. I have also found people on this forum have given me some online vet supply co.'s. websites. I love my dogs so much, and to keep them I have to be a thrifty shopper. Not cheap, just frugal. If they need a vet's care, I will be there in a minute. Vet supplies are a whole different thing though, don't you think? I also use this forum to read about pet owner's health care issues, training methods and learn so much. (different opinions, ways of doing things etc. etc)

I'm a very pliable consumer when it comes to the health of my pets. To tell you the truth, she could have said the online pharmacies are crap, pay more for our meds which are guaranteed and I would have said "duh...ok, here's my money".
Its not a big difference in price to begin with, maybe $5-10 a box. A fair price to pay with all those value-added services that I get.
