I have always given 1T of pumpkin with food, until the problem disappeared. I would give him pumpkin for 24 hours. If your dog is still straining after that, take to the vet, as it may be more serious than constipation.

Taking him for a nice long walk might help as well.

We walk at least four times a week. Well, he had a bowel movement awhile ago but it wasn't very healthy looking. The pumpkin must have worked,tho. I'll call the vet tomorrow if he doesn't show any improvement. Thanks.

I've given Scooby two - three tablespoons a day since Wednesday of this week and this morning his BM looked larger and more solid. He loves the pumpkin, licks it right off the spoon.

Good to hear! I always keep some pumpkin on hand - frozen in tablespoon amounts. Oddly, it works for diarrhea too.

Yes, the freezing of portions IS a good idea because now I have this large can of pumpkin to somehow keep fresh (the store only sold the large sized can).

My cat is still a big pumpkin fan even though she hasn't had bowel issues since I started her on the pumpkin regimen 2 years ago...she still gets 1/8 oz with each meal.

Freezing the pumpkin is a good idea...I put the servings into an ice cube tray and allow to freeze overnight. The next morning the frozen cubes get transfered into a zip lock bag. They get defrosted as needed in a tupperware container. The defrosted pumpkin easily lasts a week in the fridge.
