where should a stair runner "end"?

I am designing a runner for my entry stairs. I am trying to decide if the runner should extend past the stairway on top and/or bottom?
We have hard wood floors throughout the entire upstairs and downstairs.
Also, curious if the runner design is appropriate. Pic attached.
