seems like I used a combination of antibiotics to prevent secondary infections & oatmeal shampoo or a medicated wash, followed by Happy Jack, an oily, sulphurous, acrid-smelling product from the feed store.

The vet said stress reduction was the best thing (& then we went back to talking about the dog...).

A Boxer I had found on the interstate had such a severe case of sarcoptic mange that she looked like the landscape of the moon, all craters & excrescenses.

no hair, dry flaky skin punctuated by bleeding areas, & her skin was hot from the secondary infections.

Vet said spaying (or neutering), good food rich in omega 3s, & a calm, structured life are the best things for this.

She thought the Boxer may have been dumped by a puppy mill, which would have been a *very* stressful existence.

Boxer Rescue took her & were thrilled with her, & I'm grateful to this day that they were there!

These dogs lead as stress free of a life that most of us would envy! :-) They're spayed/neutered, except for the youngest who is due. They go on wild mountain walks (it's a Colorado thing!) and have plenty of exercise and all they could want. We love them like children!

What medication did you or your vet use to get rid of the mange>?

As I said, it was years ago;
if I ever did know exactly what it was, I've forgotten.

If I had a dog with mange today, I'd use a pure shampoo, like oatmeal shampoo, & put Happy Jack on the 'hot' areas.

Mange mites have to breathe, & Happy Jack (I sure hope they still make that stuff!), which is so thick that it doesn't tend to run & which smells so bad that dogs don't lick it off, will suffocate them.
