HELP PLEASE!!! We aquired a Chi.We have had her for over a month and she is sweet tempered and well behaved. She asks to go out ,and uses papers at night.BUT, the last two nights she has wet on our bed,and we cant figure out why. She shows no symtoms of any bladder infections.Any clues why?? And how can I break her??

If she is indeed housebroken, isn't that a symptom of bladder infection?

AS I said in the post,,she shows no bladder infection symptoms. Shes cheerful and playfull, eating and drinking normally.

Assuming there is no medical issue, such as a UTI:

*You dog is not house trained. This is a matter of professional theory (no accidents for 9 months, aside from medical issues).

*You don't state the dogs age. Theory has it: the dog should be able to "hold it" for one hour for each month of age, up to about 8 months. If your dog is using the paper in the middle of the night, you have a problem.

*Using the paper is a huge mistake. It confuses the dog, it needs to be put on a schedule for walking at least twice a day to get things moving, plus mid day breaks. Scheduling should also be in place for feeding about every 12 hours, unless the vet says otherwise.

*Crate the dog, for at least 9 months, when you cannot supervise every second, (at least 3-4 months of this time with a leash, depending on how well dog progresses). Then begin the crate weaning process, gradually.

*Recognize that you have a problem. It will get worse unless you decide you want it fixed and you take appropriate steps to make that happen. Wetting the bed like your dog is doing COULD indicate a UTI. If this is the case, it needs to be diagnosed and treated A.S.A.P. Been there, done that with UTI experience (unfortunately, lots of it). My experience: I changed the dog to a hypo allergic food, and clean her "lady part" once in the evening before bed. This has kept it in check for about 15 months (thank you Sirius, god dog, I always say that when discussing UTI).

The dog is 11 months old. She asks to go out in the daytime, has had no accidents, and only uses the paper when we occassionally are gone and cant take her out. She does not ask to go out or use the papers at night. She adapted very well ,bonded immediately, and is even very gentle with my two year old grandbaby(who has been taught to be quiet and gentle around the dog). The dog adores her!
I do have one question,,,and it may be far fetched. We have a cat that often sleeps on the bed .So far they just avoid each other, no hissing or barking.Hubby sometimes will shoo the dog away when he is napping and let the cat stay. Could the dog be doing the wetting out of jealousy??? Just a wild guess???

She isn't potty trained if she is still using papers at night.

She is a small dog, there is a good chance that she hurt herself once jumping off the bed and is afraid of that jump in the dark now.

You fix it the same as you do any other breed of dog. You remove her food and water an hour before bed. Then you take her out before bed and make sure she goes, no matter how long it takes. Then set an alarm for 4 hours later and get up to take her out. Praise her when she goes, go back to bed and set the alarm for 4 more hours. Little by little you set the alarm for longer periods of time and she will learn to hold it.

She is going to pee until she is truly housebroken. Peeing in bed, I would ban her from bed until she can hold it all night.

You should be leash walking your dog at least 3 times a day. Teaching your dog to go on the paper is teaching your dog to pee in the house, and therefore your dog is not housebroken.
If the dog is threatened by the cat, she WILL mark the bed as her own. This is a sign your dog does not see you as the boss of the house, she sees herself as the boss, and you will soon find yourself with other behavioral issues if you dont nip this bad behavior in the bud - If you are serious about resolving this issue, leash walk your dog in the morning, in the afternoon, after dinner and again just before retiring for the night. Teach your dog some basic training - sit, stay, leave it, off or down etc...Good luck

Peeing on the bed is a way of showing possession. Your dog is marking her spot. It could be a way of owning you or trying to keep the cat off.

The only symptom of a UTI most dogs exhibit is inappropriate urination- peeing where they shouldn't. They don't feel bad unless the infection is not confined to the bladder, in which case there is a serious infection of the bladder or something else. They almost always have normal appetite and activity levels. If she is not spayed, she could have a life-threatening pyometra, infection of the uterus. Most dogs start showing signs such as inappropriate urination. A vet check is definitely warranted especially considering that this is a new problem.

You need to catch a urine sample and take it to the Vet. I use a small glad ware containers and slip it under their bottom when they are peeing.

Maybe potty doggie in the evening before bed, and right in the morning when you raise, asking a little dog to hold it in all night is cruel lMO. Little dogs need to be treated like dogs, though and by babying her, you may be the root of the issue. Its a debatable topic, but at 11 months she shouldn't be babied.

I have an appointment scheduled for her. We rae getting her spayed. I see some of you frown on the paper training, but she always asks to go out,but will use a paper if we are gone and cant take her out. Also, in really bad weather,in my opinion, its ok ..
I dont know what you mean by babying her. I have rules and she is obeying most commands now,and I allow her on my lap when I want her there, and she understnds its my decision when, not hers. She is excellent around our two year old granddaughter that we babysit, after we were warned they are not good with kids. She loves playing with her,and when the grandbaby takes a nap she lays right beside the playpen.Im sure some of that is that we are diligent in making sure the baby respects the dog,and doesnt tease, or do anything the dog finds bothersome. So its all working out well. Thanks for the advice.

    Caroline, please email me. Thanks!

    Caroline,

runsnwalkin is often inappropriate and rude. If you disregard that, please accept our advice with the respect that accompanied it. Many members here have copious experience with dogs and cats, and will analyze your question with the bigger picture you present. So please don't be put off.

    Good luck with your dog!

I'm not being rude nor inappropriate Elly nj, I'm being realistic- a 11 month old dog that pees in your bed has got issues-sigh. 11 months is old enough to bear young if not spayed, certainly not a childish puppy phase- a 13 year old human that pees on his/her bed would be/should be getting professional help- a dog is no different in what's acceptable at that age.

I think you've found the root of your potty problems issue Caro- I think its a hormonal issue- that will go away once fixed..

Im not put of with anyone. I do find it annoying when people dont read everything clearly and start giving advice. I asked for help because I have never owned a Chihuahua. This dog was given to me because her owner had to move. I do not believe the dog has "issues". She is very content and well behaved. The bed peeing was a one time thing. Im thinking it was about the cat. She was marking what she wanted.I dont see that as an issue,,,but rather just doing what comes naturally. AGAIN, she askes when she has to go out,and uses a paper if we arent here to take her out.I did not like Chihuahuas and would never have chosen one, but she is a wonderful sweet little dog. I am the one that made an issue of her peeing on the bed,as I never had a dog do that. Now that I have done some research I am confident she is well adjusted and happy.

She looks happy, and very nice. could it be a thing of her past, prehaps she's afraid that you will leave her like her previous owner?
