Update RE: Uti again!

So -

Coda had her vet appt this morning. She does have a UTI and will be on antibiotics for the next 10 days. They couldn't take a culture for a sensitivity test because she was releasing any urine immediately and they couldn't get anything out of her bladder.

The bad news though, is her bladder is completely full of stones. She is scheduled for a cystotomy on Thursday, and will also need to be on a prescription diet for life.

Poor girl - the vet said they have likely been building for quite some time, and she was surprised the vet that diagnosed her last UTI never felt compelled to check for stones.

The vet said she could *possibly* have a slightly inverted vulva but was hard to see with the irritation and they will look closer when they do the surgery and she's under anesthetic. She said unless it causes recurrent UTI's it probably won't be an issue, though.

    Poor Coda, POOR YOU!!

What a mess. I'm sure the stones are not very comfortable.

I've been investigating various foods (one of my dogs has a liver issue). This in addition to my UTI dog and all of her issues has educated me about what different foods do and how they target problems.

You might want to Google your dogs conditions and food recommended just to educate yourself. It really does help. There are also supplements that are available, but I have not used them. From what I gather, a good diet that targets the problem is usually enough to keep things under control.

Also, if you are going to your regular vet, you might consider consulting a specialist just to get another opinion. This route has saved me tons of time and money.

    Good luck!!

SG - thanks. I fully intend to look up different foods. There is a LOT of corn in this food, it even LOOKS like little pieces of corn.

I will definitely consider a specialist if this problem comes up again. Unfortunately there are none close by and with how full of Stones Coda is, it's pretty urgent to get her in, lest she get a blockage and need a life or death trip to the vet.

Next time (hopefully there is NO next time) I will look into dissolving the stones with food. She is too far gone to take that chance this time - but if they come back and we catch them early enough it is definitely an option.

Well, she made it! And the vet said she was wagging her tail after surgery, so she's still happy!

One week of pain killers and major restrictions on her activities and hopefully all will be back to almost normal!

We have a woman at our work- Bonnie who is obese and suffered a chest pain- she came back to work about a week later- from what i hear the staff at her group home just let her pig out and now because of it she has to wear a heart machine. She moving out of there though

......... stupid is what stupid does!- (I'm referring to the people/caregivers who should have known better, not to Bonnie)

I use this example because in both species nature didn't intend them to eat what they are eating and to live long enough to see the results of it. I would Try EVO, Zwi peak,Wellness grain free,Orijen

Evo not an option, she did not do well on that food. Wellness also not an option as that is what she was on. Zwi peak does not exist here. Orijen however is an option. Still waiting on the results of the type of stones she had to know what her diet requires, though. So until then I have decided to keep her on the Royal Canin instead of messing with her tummy too much.

She has been chewing her feet on the RC and the vet knows this and she is looking into other options for me, too.
