Good job for trying to make a better diet for your dog...

its the right thing to do.. I would look online about it and see which one is best. Dog wise forums are good.

Well, there is TUMS and then there is EXTRA STRENGTH TUMS.

I am looking a jar of ultra strength tums. Each tablet contains 1000mg of calcium carbonate. (I think regular Tums has 500mg of calcium carbonate per tablet.) And I have no idea how many teaspoons per tablet... if I were to estimate, I would say one or two tablets per teaspoon.

thanks for your help. I didnt realise there were different strengths and just to make things more confusing the tablets we get under a different brand here are 800mg strength, sheesh

I've sent off an email to the vet site that had the recipe listed to see if they can clarify it, so hopefully I'll get a reply

thanks again

The Tums is likely used as a calcium supplement. Necessary if you don't plan to give your dog raw bones. You could use other calcium supplements (bone meal). For kidney disease, don't restrict the protein in your dog's diet, you just need more easily digestible protein. Also be careful that you meet all nutritional needs. I understand why owners try to help sick dogs by looking at diet, but so wish folks would do this before the dogs are in crisis. No disrespect to you, and hope your dog does well.

Hi Cynthia, Im taking her back to the vets again today to discuss some things. Unfortunately she has only just started showing symptoms so I had no idea her kidneys were failing but the same thing happened with my other dog 6 months ago, there were no symptoms until her kidneys were in very poor shape and even then she was so energetic that it was hard to believe when we heard the news. The only symptom was she was a bit off her food and 6 weeks later her kidneys failed completely. Kidney crisis seems to come on very suddenly without any warning it seems
