My experience shows that cats will not/cannot be trained to barf in an assigned area. The best thing to do...is just as you did...find a good carpet cleaner-stain remover.

My current cat, Odessa, is the only cat I've ever had who is not a barfer at all...she's been with us for a year and a half and has only barfed up one hairball...nothing else. My late cats have ranged from constant regurgitators (undigested food after meals) to less frequent hairball barfers.

Other posters on this board have suggested that some cats have a physical malformation of their esophagus that may make them more prone to barfing. But whatever it is, this is a totally involuntary action that, unlike elimination, your cat cannot control.

For what its worth, Odessa is the first cat I've had who is on a diet of 90% high quality canned food...very little dry. Maybe that makes a difference.

Lfnyc, I think I'm pretty sure something I fed her made her throw up. Too rich chicken. Learned that lesson. This is the first time she threw up. I'll just go over it with carpet cleaner again. Thanks.

Simple Solution. Soak the area with SS, let it dry.

Hot water and baking soda in a spray bottle also helps clean thoroughly and eliminate odor.

In a pinch I use baby wipes on the initial 'spill' and it gets most of the odor and stain right away.
