tile plan for bathroom

Hi - I've only been over here about once for decorating advice and you all were very helpful. I've been in bathrooms lately trying to make decisions about a small bathroom remodel. I'm really struggling with tile choices and not getting much advice over in bathrooms. If I share some more details is this something you all could provide some guidance on?

We undertook updating one of ours this past winter. It is a fairly standard 6 x 8 full bath in which we changed the flooring along with some other features. Our final choice was marble tiles, set on a diagonal. Happy with the outcome. Photos are linked below showing some before and after. Hope this helps get you started. Good luck.

fnmroberts = I just looked at your bathroom makeover and I love how it turned out. What paint color did you use?

I have fallen in love with glass tiles. You can check them out in the HGTV green home 2010 tour on line in the master bath, although I am not thrilled with that particular application. I was at a local tile shop recently with a friend where I saw some glass bulls eye tiles that were teal/bottle glass/green that are such a knock out I have decided to use them as my back kitchen backsplash. fnmroberts your bathroom is perfect. kt

fnmroberts, I love your new bathroom. Is that the Delta Lahara faucet? I really like that series; how is it working for you?

gibby3000, post your info and someone will help.

msrose - Thank you, the color is a medium grey (C2 - Monday Morning), in an Eggshell finish. Our first experience with C2 and we like how it applied and the finished appearance.

runktrun - thank you. One never knows how something may look until it is finished. We are pleased.

kiko - It is a Kohler faucet, sorry but I don't remember the model name. Only comment we can offer is that the water flow is more like a shower spray at low volume but normal when more fully open. We see the purpose in all these water saving applications but sometimes they're not perfected yet. Cleans nicely though. Appreciate the compliment.

We did our kids 5 x 8 bathroom in November. It was our 2 1/2 week, DIY remodel. We chose porcelain tile since we have well water which can be tough on things. Floor tile is 6 x 6 set on a diagonal with 2 x 2 black marble inset.

The shower is 6 x 6 tiles with a border consisting of black marble pencil liner and 2 x 2 black marble. The nooks we made have 2 inch thick granite shelves that match the vanity countertop; blue pearl granite.

Thanks for your willingness to help. I'm not sure how much value there is in any photos as I'm gutting the current bathroom so anything that's there now will be gone.

This is a 7 x 7.5 bathroom - will have clean simple lines, dark wood vanity, off white toilet and tub, Witch Hazel Corian counter (ivory with brown marble-ish pattern) and I want the tile to be ivory/beige/possibly brown accents. Everything entirely neutral (towels, etc. will provide color).

I think I have pretty much settled on some kind of subway tile. I keep liking that look every time I see it over anything else I see. I don't want any kind of travertine because I have had that in my kitchen for the last five years and I want something different. I want a matte tile though and that seems to present some complications. I also ran into some snags with an off white tub and off white tile - like trying to match but missed - so then I went to something slightly darker.

I've been looking as Crossville Savoy tile and thought I'd made a decision on a 3x6 matte subway in Cafe for the walls with Linen trim/accents until I found out that all of their trim pieces only come in a glossy finish. I'm not so sure a combo of glossy and matte is such a good thing. So I left the tile showroom after that feeling completely back to square one. I love the look of the old fashioned bathrooms with the subway tile and hex floors but my house is kind of contemporary so I think what I'm striving for is a moderated version of that look.

So here's what I'm trying to figure out.

Shower/tub combo and walls will have some kind of subway running bond type field tile. Could be 3x6 or 4x8 but not the larger stuff. Shower will have walls and ceiling tiled. Walls outside the shower will go up to 48 inches. On the walls outside of shower I'd like something like this:

some kind of chair rail type piece
    row of tile
    liner piece of tile
something decorative that's maybe 4 inches wide
    liner piece
    rest of field tile
maybe a moulding type tile at the bottom where it joins the floor

I'm not sure if I would continue any of this into the shower or just have the shower "plain" subway or with some other kind of "decorative/interesting" accent. I'm leaning toward plain since there is so much other stuff in the tub/shower area.

I noticed in the Savory brochure that is shows the matte tile with the glossy trim and liner pieces. Maybe it's okay to have the combo. When I stopped to think about it I realized I have honed limestone in kitchen with glass accent tiles and I like that contrast.

Not sure about the floors. I was kind of intrigued by the Savoy hex tiles though I have hex tile now (in the bathroom and two other areas). Not sure if I want to have something different or continue that theme. If not that then some kind of larger running bond medium colored floor tile.

Though this picture isn't quite the kind of tile I'd want I like this bathroom - the clean lines, the colors, etc.
