Cats don't punish. People do. Kittens aren't lazy. People are.

There are many reasons cats soil out of the box. The first is because of illness, which you have already confirmed with the recurring diarrhea. Cats sometimes develop an aversion to their litter box after a bout of diarrhea or UTI, because they associate the litter with the pain they experienced.

Have you changed the litter lately? Has the vet checked him out?

Do you keep him in the basement all the time? (You said "he continues to poop in all ober the basement at night only, I think." Why do you think it's only at night?)

Your cat may be stressed by the older cat, and that may be why he soils. In introducing a new cat to the home, it is essential to keep the separate for weeks before integrating them. You say it's not fair that your cat is going through misery. That, I am afraid, is a situation you created. Your best option is to try to separate them for awhile.

It also sounds like you are blaming him for being a playful kitten that irritates the geriatric cat in the house you brought him into. I advise you not ban him away from family contact. Certainly contain him somewhat, but interact, visit and play with him. Isolation will not make him a loved pet. See if he has a health problem by taking him to the vet.

Ditto what elly said. You need to remember this is a kitten so he's going to be active, inquisitive , and seeking attention. The fact it's a Siamese makes it even more sad. My past experience with the breed was that it was like having a young child in the house. They're very intelligent cats that love to play and interact with their owners, and their 'feelings' are hurt very easily.

Is your basement a finished basement with controlled temps?
It doesn't sound like you really care for the cat, and only because of that do I say you should find him a home where he's truly wanted. But first have him checked by a vet.

Hey jewel1,I dont blame you for how you feel.Dont listen to anyone here who acts judgemental.If cats were so easy to take care of and understand then this forum would be empty,wouldnt it? Certainly you cannot be blamed for this cat's problem when all you tried to do was give it a good home!
Easy for others not in the situation to act holier then thou about it.
If you do decide you cannot keep him,please dont let anyone here make you feel bad about it.You are ultimately the one who has to live this way,not them!You certainly shouldnt let this other cat bully your older one either.

My advice:

Try giving him a food that has either Lamb or chicken with rice.I read this on the link I provided,and it really helped when my kitten had diarerra.
I also want to ask,does the cat appear to have a pot belly at all? It could be worms if he does,which may explain the diarrhea.Alot of cats are born with roundworms,and it does tend to make their stools runny.
The link also says a 24 hour fasting (no food) may help with diarerra too.

To me,it does sound like a behavior problem though.And I have known alot of siameese cats to have behavior problems.You could try taking him to a vet,they may give you a cat anti-depressant for him.
Or you could try Feliway spray that you can get at Petsmart that people on here keep taking about.Supposed to help calm cats.
My sister had a cat that pooped everywhere because it had a behavior problem though, and didnt like her other cat.She spent hundreds,if not thousands,in vet bills trying to take care of the problem and NOTHING WORKED!!! Unfortuantely,Some cats are just like that.

Siamese are VERY finicky cats when it comes to litter boxes, litter type and all that fun stuff. When I had roommates, they had a male Siamese who was neutered. Unfortunately my roommate was VERY lazy - so if I was gone for a day or two, the litter box didn't get touched. I would come home to poop all over the place because he would NOT go in the box. He still poops all over their house. I also have another friend with a Neutered Siamese and she's had all sorts of issues with him inappropriately eliminating. And I've heard of countless other people having issues, as well.

However, my first though would be to get him to the vet ASAP. Is he losing weight? Is he eating a lot, and going to the bathroom frequently and pretty quickly after he eats? Drinking lots?

How much is he pooping every day? Cats shouldn't poop several times a day, once or twice, if their food agrees with them and is of good quality.

The reason I ask is because something is clearly wrong. Locking him up is not going to solve this at all. Pooping inappropriately as well as diarrhea are signs of an illness.

My aunts cat (another siamese!) was just diagnosed with diabetes. They didn't catch it until it was almost too late and he was down to 2 pounds. Other than pooping everywhere he didn't show many symptoms until they all hit at once and he got REALLY sick.

I would take him to a vet, and then consider rehoming him. Being locked up is no life for a cat, and neither is being tormented (your older cat) I think both cats would be happier if he was rehomed.

Wow, elly_nj & annz, you are totally way off base about me and the treatment my cat is given. I do not mistreat my kitten. He is always with the family getting all kinds of attention. My kids play with him all the time, as do I. And no, I don't leave him in the basement all the time. He roams the house the whole day and has access to the litter box in the basement, which he does use during the day. I put him in the basement at night, which is when he poops on the floor in the basement. I know it is at night because when I bring him to the basement at night,I check for poop and there is none to be found. He is in the basement only at night when we are sleeping. And no,it is not dark and cold. The only reason why I put him in the basement at night is because he is pooping on our bedroom floor when we let him sleep with us. I do care about my kitten and this is why I came to this site to get advise. I had no idea how judgemental people would be.

Iloveexercise, thanks for being understanding. I have been giving him the lamb and rice food for a couple of weeks and it did wonders with the diarreha. He hasn't had diarreha since I switched foods. He has solid poops. His weight is good. I had a siamese for 17 years and know the breed very well. They can be finicky and tempermental. I am sure he is pooping because he is mad my other cat sleeps with us and he doesn't. I would love to have him with us in the bed, but don't want him pooping on my floor each night.

Yes, I can be blamed for bringing a new kitten into the house with an older cat. They were fine together when he first came. As he got bigger he started to show his dominance. I know he doesn't like when she gets attention, but believe me he is loved by all of us. I don't want to rehome him and I hope I can find a solution to this. My initial thought was to move the litter box upstairs and see if that will work for him. I will try that and see if that eliminates the pooping in places other than the litter box.

Did you De claw? That can cause litter box trouble. Maybe kitten is lonely and wants attention, Siamese are quite needy.

I think if you read your post, and pretend you're someone who doesn't know anything about you or your home, you'll see why we gave the answers we did.

Maybe you see it that way annz,but I'am a newbie here too,and I see you all being quite uppity and judgemental in quite a few threads.(not you personally,but I felt that was the general tone here)
I blew my stack in another thread for being jumped on cuz I admitted to letting my 9 year old cat outside for an hour or so while I supervised him and was accused of being lazy and not wanting to clean the litter box when my cat DOESNT go to the bathroom outside!!
Some of you just like to jump to conclusions that arent there because it suits your purpose.
All I'm saying is,LIGHTEN UP.Give people a chance before you start with the sarcastic comments and judgements that someone doesnt love their pet.
If we didnt love our pets,then why would we waste our time here???

A few people mentioned this is a way of cats marking their territory when they dont like another cat.I have read that a cat will defecate on the path the other cat has to travel.Strange.

I see your user name and laugh because my kitty gets a visit at 5:00am each day when my husband goes to the gym in our basement with his buddy ( he loves exercise, LOL). That hour for me is unheard of. They work out and my kitty talks and plays with them all morning and then he comes up to wake me. He's a real character. In fact he is sitting in front of the roaring fire, right now, looking like a seal laying on his back. No poop last night. I kept my other cat on the bed in the bedroom and he hung out watching tv with me in the livingroom before bed.

LOL...Werid,cuz one of my cats also likes it when I exercise! He always has to be in the room with me when I'm doing it and looks very relaxed and happy :) When he was a kitten he'd be climbing on top of me or trying to go underneath me.

I sympathize with your predicament. Have had Siamese cats for over 25 years and litter box issues as well, but not so much when they were young. I recommend multiple litter boxes for multiple cats. My current young neutered male is very picky about 'marking' his box as soon as the litter is changed. He prefers a dirty box, I guess because then he has made it his. Another issue can be the material you are using for him to go in. My current guy is fine with wheat litter, but past cats have had definite preferences and refused to go in a box with the wrong material.

Our old house had a basement that was really suitable only for storage, furnace, and laundry, and our elderly cat pooped outside the box and in various spots on the floor, but she had arthritis and had a hard time standing on the rim of the box in her old age, and refused to stand on the litter material itself, so there was lots of cleanup involved with her, but she faithfully went to the basement for her 'accidents' unless she wasn't able to hold it while she made the slow descent. She lived to age 21, so this was in the last 2 years or so of her life.

You mentioned you have children and I wonder if your new kitty could share a room with one of them while your older cat shares yours. That might help the new cat feel welcome at night and more likely to hit the right spot for pooping.

I had heard that it's a good idea to get a kitten when your cat gets older--supposedly the older cat will train the kitten and discipline them and you will never be without a cat. I thought about doing it but I couldn't see my cat ever accepting another cat in the house since she went nuts if she ever saw another cat on our property. She would sometimes sit at the glass doors let out blood chilling screams during the night when she spotted a cat in the yard.

When my beloved cat passed away, I got a new kitten right away. What shock it was just for me! I had gotten so used to my calm, loving mature cat that the kitten seemed like a little ping-pong ball who always wanted me to play. She is curious about EVERYTHING. I skipped making cookies and gingerbread houses this year because I knew it would be hard for her to resist "getting involved". At times, I wondered if I made a mistake and should have adopted one of the many adult cats instead of this frisky little kitten. But every month she gets a bit calmer and more loving and I'm glad I adjusted to her.

I am no expert on cats. In the early days, my kitten would use the box and not cover. I read up on it and found it was because I was keeping the level of litter in the box too low for her. It said that kittens like to dig around in the litter more than older cats and will stop if there are already "lumps" in it. I got a box with higher sides and put more litter in it & try to make sure I clean out the box twice a day (especially before she eats) and she always covers when I do this. I noticed the kitten drinks much more water and uses the box to wet much more often than my mature cat did. I am surprised how much more use the litter box gets with the kitten.

I sure do hope your kitties can learn to tolerate each other for all of your sakes. It was hard enough on me to have my kids bickering, I would feel very torn to have an annoyed mature cat and a cute frisky kitten going at it. Your experiences makes me glad I didn't get a kitten any sooner.

It does sound like a good idea to have more litter boxes on different levels of the house.

I would switch all cats to both a cat and kitten food. Innova Evo is good along with Instincts,ziwi peak, or Orijen.. Sense one of your cats has medical issues she may have issues with the new food,you could segergate her from the others if the new foods don't work.

Did you change the litter/brand recently?

Busy with the holidays. Haven't been able to post until today. My kitten is doing much better with the pooping issue. My older cat is tolerating him more and more each day. My kitten pooped only twice under a chair in the past couple of weeks. I had changed the litter, but went back to the original litter, which he seems to like better. He is doing well on his food. He is so funny. We found that he likes baskets. Any size will do, so we made up a basket with a blanket in it and put it in front of the fireplace. He loves it. I am going to try him out in the basket in one of the kids room. I tried the kids room once before, but he liked to play at night and would wake them. It can't hurt to try again. Thanks for all your well wishes. My taking kitty is doing wonderful. I am thrilled to have another Siamese. Boy do they have personalities.
