I don't have them, but I saw some on a house tour last year. They were gorgeous & if I had to do it over, I'd buy them in a heartbeat! They were a solid charcoal grey color, probably from Buckingham Slate in VA as the house was also located in central VA. The slate was very similar to several hearths that I have that were mined by that company.

My neighbor had them in her last house; they were beautiful and she installed them in her new house and they are just as lovely.

I'm looking into them myself. Does anyone know how much they run per square foot?

I hAve been trying to find some more information about slate countertops including pricing but have not had much luck here in Chicago
Anyone have any info they could share, please?

I have also posted questions about slate countertops, but no one here seems to have them, or if they do, they're not sharing! Type in soapstone, however, and they're everywhere! Why doesn't anyone have slate? I am having a love affair with my 4X4 samples--they look and feel amazing! I have experimented with scratches and wine, etc, and it bounces back beautifully with the help of a scotch brite pad or even steel wool for deeper scratches. This is definitely the front runner for me!!

I too loved slate--vermont green slate to be exact. But when I emailed the vermont company that seems to be the best source and I told them that my top installed price for countertops was $85sf, it was serious LOL time. I think it was closer to $200.

So- I'm in the process of choosing between Lagos Blue Caesarstone and Cambrian Black Antique. I've designed all the kitchen decisions around the Lagos Blue, BUT after much poring over the "unresolved" durability issues discussed on these threads I've about abandoned it Now I need a price on the Cambrian Black and it's Sunday night and I can't find it on the web...

Choosing finishes is the fun part -but also very frustrating.

I'm looking into slate also. I have some samples and they are really nice. FWIW the Kitchen Designer/Susan Serra really likes slate, per articles on her site. The one quote I got so far puts slate in the same ballpark as soapstone. One thing to consider is that it usually comes in thinner slabs than granite and soapstone. You can get it thicker but it is tremendously heavy and expensive. But the thinner black look is sleek with simply styled cabinets -- kind of grows on you.

We decided against it. My husband lived in a house (in England) that had them. He said they look a mess in no time (scratches and etches from what I understand).

Edlakin, a member here who is probably not very active any more, had slate countertops.
You can read about 'em and see some gorgeous pics in this thread (link:
