outside support - window covers

Okay, that probably didn't make sense as a subject. Our sliding patio doors face east. Since they cut our 'forest' down for condos (that aren't selling!) we have no shade there. Since a real patio cover can't be done (we rent), I still want to cover the sliding doors to cut the heat from the sun. But it needs to be suspended a bit so they don't get in the way of the sliding door. I was thinking of putting a curtain rod (probably wood) out there and staple some mats that I have to them. Or make a canvas curtain with weights at the bottom.

Does this seem to make sense? We have a privacy fence, so the 'view' doesn't matter. Ideally I'd have a rod (or something) suspended about 3' out from the door, then the covering draped from the house over the edge to keep the sun off the doors, but also so the dogs have room to get to the door to scratch. I'd like something easy, reasonably attractive as our back yard needs all the help it can get in that dept. I'll probably want to be able to roll it up.

Am I making ANY sense here?
