Landscaping -- mulching materials

We are building our pool now. We will have an area between the concrete deck and our fence (not sure of size yet) that we plan to landscape. What type of mulching materials are best to cut down on the materials being blown into the pool?

We know lava rock--not a fan of, get bleached in the sun too much -- so maybe lighter colored rocks??.
