We're in the process of having a paver patio installed. The blocks are Brussels by Unilock. Anyway, there is a large landing area off of our back patio doors, with a pillar on each side. Also, there will be a seating wall around the patio perimeter with periodic pillars interspersed. There will be a total of eight pillars (counting the two on the landing).

The eight pillars include the two on the landing area. In addition, there is one pillar on either side of the sidewalk entry to the patio, and one pillar on either side of a walkway onto the patio from the other side. Finally, there are two more pillars spaced randomly to break up the long seating wall areas. The patio is curved.

We would like to install pier lanterns to light the area around the patio, but we're unsure if we should have lighting on all of the pillars or just some of them. Plus, we already have two lights on either side of the patio door, mounted to the house.

Is there some sort of rule as to spacing outdoor lighting?
