Wooden Pool Build

Hey there, new to the board, good to find someone that might be able to help. I am looking for some advice on a pool I want to build. Long story short, I will probably excavate a 16X20 hole about 3 feet deep, to suit a 48 inch pool, with 1 foot exposed. My construction will be 4X4 posts every four feet, entirely lined with 2X6 pressure treated timber building a huge box, that will be lined sides and bottom with 1-2 inches of closed cell foam, sand covered over foam on bottom. Possibly migth but 4 inches of river gravel on the outside of the box for better drainage in hopes of slowing decay? I am looking to use a rectangle overlap liner on this project. Liner will be overlapped and fastened with 3/4" boards on the outside with screws. I know that people used to build wooden pools but cant find any type of usable info on design/stucture. It seems the idea is still popular among some circles in Europe, but still no technical specs, only pictures which have made me more confident it is possible. The reason I am looking into wood is I am quite handy with it and it will allow me to have a mostly in ground pool, so as to avoid the huge steel monster look in the backyard. The price savings will be minimal with labor factored in, but I believe I will have a better pool for the money.

What are some thoughts? I dont mind critism at all.

    Why put foam under the floor? If the water table rises, so will the foam.

    Wood warps, especially if it's exposed to weather.

    The 4x4s will need to provide lateral support as well as vertical support.

    Neat stuff!

    I'm not an engineer, but having done a lot with wood outdoors over the years, I'd suggest that you consider upgrading the 4x4 posts to 4x6 with the long dimension perpendicular to the pool wall, and consider using those same 4 x 6s on the lower part of wall construction where the weight of the water will be most substantial. 2x6's don't really offer a lot of lateral strength and water is very heavy. The force it can exert, especially when a 250lb man does a cannonball into the middle of the pool, is substantial. The 1 foot portion above grade will definitely need some form of lateral reinforcement.

    I'd also emphasize the need for proper material compaction on the pool floor and behind the walls. Also be sure to brush preservative on any cut ends while you build (apologies if I'm stating the obvious there).

    This is a really interesting approach and I hope you keep us informed if you decide to move forward. It definitely seems doable with the right materials and care. Good luck!

    As a youngster we built quite a few wooden walled vinyl liner pools. These were all late 70's early 80's. I've seen many of them still in service 30plus years later.
    The man who taught me the trade had no confidence in steel wall panels.
    Here's what we used:
    CCA (freshwater contact) PTP 6x6 rough grade posts spaced on 6' centers in 3000psi concrete, footed 36" below the floor depth, #4 rebar 15" long post crosses painted with spray can Rustoleum on the 9,18&27 parallel to the wall
    CCA (freshwater contact) PTP 3x12x18 rough grade beams fastened to the posts with 6" dipped tapered head lag screws and a large bead of liquid nails in between. The screw's back then were allen head, todays would be a #40 torx head.
    We set our zipper on every third, moving one over on every drop from the beam level.
    The kickers were cut on a table saw in the shop out of a 3x12 beam down to 3x3 and bolted with a 1/2" x 10" dipped bolt through the post with large dipped fender washers, both sprayed with Rustoleum The kicker posts were set in redimix out of our waste from the pool posts and they were also bolted. If we had enough steel left from the pool posts we'd put crosses in them too.
    We did our floors in Vermiculite.
    This lumber is what we still use for building bulkhead at our local lake.
    I purchase it as cheaply as the junk PTP that the box stores like Home Depot and Lowe's sells.
    If this wood will last underground in SE Texas near the Gulf Coast it'll last anywhere. The only lumber better would be the CCA (saltwater contact) bulkhead lumber.

    Trust me on this, I could build a pool based on this platform so affordably it would be mind boggling when compared to a concrete pool shell with a plaster pool finish.

    I have almost definately decided to sink this think into the ground for the counterforce the ground outside the walls will supply to the water on the inside of the walls. Good point on usinf 4X6 instead.

    Kelly, Sorry for the questions, but I would be defeating the purpose of the thread if I didn't ask all of them. Here it goes.

    -What is a post cross? And what is its function?

    -Confused as to what you mean by beams and what they do in this application.

    -What is a zipper?

    Sounds like someone could make a small fortune bringing this trade back into service or writing a book about the process,Hmmmmmmm.....

    Hi - looking for advice. Building a 20x16 foot above ground pool, sunk 18" in the ground, out of 4x4x16 beams. Basically a log cabin sitting in the ground. At 60" walls will the whole thing collapse or will it bear the outward pressure exerted by the water? Thanks! Greg

    @jimcricket That's a huge amount of depth to be above ground and supported by wood. If the advice in this thread isn't enough for you, I recommend starting a thread in the Trouble Free Pools forum for more specific advice.
