I would use your two ottomans that are on each side of the TV, in front of the couch, sort of like a coffee table. Then if you skooch your TV a little more toward the door, I think you would have room for a comfy chair in that corner.

You have a nice start on the room.

For artwork over the couch, you could frame some fabrics with a wide mat. I tend to think that colored photos might end up looking too busy. Of course, you could copy the photos in sepia tone or black and white.

I would recommend a larger rug. The one you have is floating in the middle of the room. Then, you could pull colors from the rug and accessorize your room. I think you need more color in there. The wall color is nice, though.

I also think two bookshelves (maybe 30" wide) that match the tv stand on each side of the stand so that it looks like a wall unit.

You also need some kind of artwork over your mantle. You can find pieces inexpensively at Home Goods. You can also look at thrift stores and online.

And, what is your budget for this room? Come up with a dollar number that you are willing to spend on accessories.

grandmaof3-I'm open to this idea! If I move the TV stand down, it won't be in the center of couch. Will that look weird..not having the TV in the middle of the wall?

dawnp-I was afraid the photos wouldn't work. That's a major bummer...it would probably be the least expensive option for me. Just curious what I can expect to pay for artwork that will fill this wall space?
Also, would the rug look better if I pulled it closer to the couch, so that the feet were under it? Trying to avoid a rug expense if I can.
I definitely agree that I need more color in the room. I'm into warm colors and I usually translate that as brown, brown, brown! Would love something bright to add some interest to the room.
Re: the mantle. I agree it needs something. Again, I'm clueless on artwork! Will have to really research this to see what would look nice. Do you think wall lettering could work?

les-I only use the door to the right of the fireplace. Mainly, to let the dog out and/or when we have family BBQ's. That's the door we use for foot traffic to the backyard. When the weather is nice, I usually open it up to let light into the room.
No, I don't watch TV from the kitchen. Our main viewing area is either the couch or the floor.
Extra seating is for when we have guests; I'm finding that it would be nice to have seating to accommodate about 3-4 more adults. Not sure how to make that work in this small space, though. What I usually do is drag in my ladderback chairs from the dining room, but it would be nice to have a stationary piece or two in the room.

graywings-Don't really have a budget, but I'm hoping to keep it under $500-1000 (would prefer to stay closer to $500 side!). I plan to look on CraigsList for any furniture pieces. Just really unsure on what type would be best for the space.

You might want to consider a bench in front of the fireplace and angle a small chair by the half wall.

I like the idea of scooting the tv cabinet down and putting a chair in the corner. That would help fill up the wall a little too - looking a little empty now.

The ottomans would be fine as a coffee table. Put a tray across one of them to hold glasses. (Wine glasses, preferably - you'll want a drink when this is all done. ;-))

I would love to see some taller knick knacks on the fireplace mantel. You've got a lot of very small objects there, and I'd rather see a few taller ones to make a statement. Tall vases, candlesticks... Maybe colorful to tie in the great colors you've got elsewhere in the room (like those great pillows on top of the ottomans).

And yes, a picture over the fireplace too.

Nice room! Putting the sofa up against the wall will open the room to allow more seating without it feeling crowded.

If you don't want to use the ottomans I'd definitely get a coffee table.

Our TV is on a wall similar to your's and on the left side of it I have a medium size Palm plant which really looks nice there!

Try switching to using the left-hand door.

Move the TV stand down and angle it across the right-hand doorway. You could always add a screen ot a tall plant behind it to cover the doorway.

Then you'll have enough room around the short wall to add two small chairs. Experiment by trying your dining chairs there. Keep checking your local Craigs List for suitable size, shape and style chairs. And you may even find a coffee table!

For artwork -- try photographing local scenery and have the photos printed with sepia (or brown) tones. Find four large frames with creamy mats -- and add the photos. The smaller photos will look very cool in the larger matted frames. Hang as a four-square grid above the sofa. Do a separate photo of a single local large tree the same way -- and hang above the fireplace.

In answer to your question...no, I do not think the TV will look weird if it is not centered in front of the couch, as long as you have an overstuffed chair in the corner, with maybe a floor lamp beside it or behind it to fill up that space.

I would move the tv to the corner where the bookshelf is now, on the other wall, and put the couch on the wall where the TV is. It would be much nicer to look into your room and see seating, rather than the tv. The TV and cabinet can sit at an angle across that corner, be hidden by the full wall, and be visible from the couch and other seating.

And no, things don't have to be centered on the walls at all.

Move the bookcase to sit under the half-wall. Put a lamp on the left side of it, where the full height part of the wall is, to create some light in that corner at that end of the couch. Move the floor lamp to the door end of the couch.

I think using the ottomans as a coffee table is a great suggestion. Those will also be more likely to be used as extra seating if they are out,rather than tucked against the wall and covered with things. A tray, as mentioned, gives you stability for drinks,etc.

On the other wall where the couch was, you should have enough room for a pair of chairs as long as they aren't too bulky. A table between them with a lamp for lighting on that side of the room will be a help. If you have an IKEA nearby, a pair of these, with washable slipcovers, might be a good choice:

You could always get a second set of slipcovers.

As for art, I think the grouping of family photos would be very nice, and bring some color into the room. I would do all in the same simple frames, with warm white or cream matting. That grouping could go above the couch, which will be the least busy wall in the room.

On the other side, where the tv and chairs are, I think you could get away with nothing, or think about a couple of wall shelves with some of your small items from the mantel, perhaps other smaller pieces that are special to you. I would hang them once the other furniture and lighting is in place.

Above the fireplace, a round mirror would be perfect to break up all the square lines of the fireplace and doors.

Down the line I would get rid of the panels on the doors and mount woven wood blinds there.

Also in the future, I think you need to get a larger rug. For now, though, see what looks best once you have moved all the furniture into place. I am thinking that you will likely do best with it anchored under the front legs of the couch in the new location.

choclot, you can also use Craigslist to find artwork and mirrors at a low cost. I have purchased several extremely nice well framed prints and an oil painting for very reasonable prices and two absolutely gorgeous mirrors from Craigslist announcements. You can also check Goodwill and Salvation Army and thrift store/consignment shops for artwork and mirrors.

I notice you're ignoring your fireplace as a focal point.

Just out of curiousity, have you considered hanging your flat screen above it and turning your couch to face the fireplace? Ottomen for coffee tables, then you'd have room for a chair and small side table or even two on either side of the fireplace.

If not, artwork can be $.50 and it can be gudzillions of dollars, so that's an unanserable question. However, Home Goods has mirrors for $40 and up that would be perfect up there. Make certain it's reflecting something other than the ceiling.

Another big wall option is hanging a homemade quilt up there. It's large artwork. Just make certain it compliments your favorite brown. :)

Keep in mind if you like it? It's not wrong.
