No, you can't remove those screws.

If the fitting tool you used was plastic, be advised that Wingmaster makes a steel one you can grab with pliers, channel locks, or a vice grip for additional leverage.

So is this something that can be repaired? I did try the plastic tool and there was an opening for a screwdriver to give leverage and it just won't budge. In fact, when I tried to apply harder force the tool would just slip out of the grooves in the fitting.

What would be the next step to get this removed- does it need to be cut out?

Cutting a threaded fitting isn't that hard to do but be careful not to get the threads.

With a hacksaw blade, make two cuts in the stuck fitting, only just reaching or just short of reaching the threads. The two cuts should be 90 top 120 degrees apart. Gently push the cut section in towards the center with a flathead screwdriver. You should now be able to get the rest of the fitting out.

Did cutting out the threaded fitting work? I have to remove a threaded fitting that attaches to a pool fountain. Pliers did not work.

Ok I have the Perfect tool...It's called a Kendorf L, it is an electrical support bracket and can be bought at any good electrical part supplier. The Kendorf L is exactly an 1 1/2 wide and 1/8 thick. It is of course in the shape of an L and will have 4 holes in it (the holes are not important, just a description) this baby fits perfectly into the key notches and with the short part of the L inside the return, you have ample leverage to turn the return out...it should cost you about $1.50 . No good luck needed THIS WORKS
