sergers are wonderful for garment sewing because you get a 'professional' finished edge inside the garment.

I've seen vendors at quilt/sewing shows actually making ruffles/lace with the sergers.

Just saw a book called Serge and Merge by Nancy Zieman in her catalog, looks like that might be of interest. I was planning on ordering it. No interest or connection to this company was just looking at her catalog before I logged onto this site today. I also use my serger for piecing quilts, crochet edging on hankies, and doilies. I think the best invention ever!!

Makes nice edges on placemats, table runners and the like,as well as finishes on clothing. On one outfit i made several years ago i made a couple yds of serger stitching in a contrasting color then formed it into a rose and zig zagged it to the garment. Was very pretty, and you couldn't tell where the zigzagging was. There are several books out on the subject.

You can't beat if for sewing on knits as far as I am concerned.
I have pieced a quilt and have put binding on a number of quilts using it. It gives a clean 1/4" but can be a challenge for the quilter as the seams are thicker. There are a number of books that are very helpful. I don't use mine as much as I could be wouldn't want to be without it. Jayne

What a great gift! Very thoughtful DH.
Sergers are wonderful machines. I've had one for many years and although I use it a lot, there are many more things I could be doing with it. I always liked Nancy Zieman's shows so I'm sure her book would be worth while. I'm going to check the website. One thing in quilting I find it useful for is serging the cut ends of new fabric before washing. It eliminates any ravelling. If you should try this be sure to cut the thread tails as they tangle otherwise.

Pillowcases and pj bottoms are easy projects to start with.
