Dishwasher falling forward???

WE have been in our new house for almost 2 months exactly. The other day I noticed the dishwasher would pull forward every time I opened it and pulled the drawers out the entire machine would move forward.

The plumber came by today and said it was b/c the dishwasher (a frigidaire) did not have holes for screws on the side to attach it to the cabinets but rather it had a space on the top to attach to the granite. He said it looked like they used silicone to attach it, but, being that the dishwasher emits HOT steam, I am assuming it eventually melted the silicone.

Our builder called us today and said we need to get in touch with the granite fabricator so they could come and screw in some sort of attachment to the granite to prevent this from happening b/c we" bought a $2 dishwasher". Will this "attachment" prevent this from happening further or does is fact that we have a $2 dishwasher going to prevent my dishwasher from staying put in my granite?

I am already disappointed in all of our appliances- they were the very first components we picked out and I feel like we were so nave when we did so, and the builder basically just verified to me that was and is the case.. (He is a friend of ours as well so I am not taking it personally what he is saying :) _.

They can glue a piece of wood to the granite and attach the DW to that. Your GC or builder can do that - you don't need the fabricator for that. That's prefereable to drilling holes into the granite which can crack it.

We just had our dishwasher installed to our granite today. I was expecting them to screw it in, I guess not because that could damage the granite. He used a small metal plate with a screw and placed drops of gorilla glue ... yes gorilla glue. I'm hoping tomorrow when I remove the shims it will be in place and I can open the door without the rest of the dishwasher coming along with it. By the way, which dishwasher do you have?

Our dish*washer install manual references that if you're installing below a stone countertop, the clips on the top can be moved to the side, and the dish*washer screwed to the cabinets on either side. Maybe yours can be, too - and you avoid going back to the granite folks.

I've read the manual several times now as I've been waiting a month for our contractor to come back and install it!

You can epoxy something to the top to which you can attach the dw. This is fairly common in low-mid range units.

Regardless of what the dishwasher cost, it is just not installed properly. I have a $500 Whirlpool and it is attached very solidly. I am sure there is more than one way to do it, but here is how mine is installed. The granite fabricators attached a piece of metal that is U shaped. I believe it is attached with epoxy to the granite. It is then screwed to the side of one cabinet, runs across the top of the dishwasher, and screwed to the side of the other cabinet. The dishwasher is also then screwed at the top (with the metal tabs that came on the dishwasher to the metal strip they attached. The screws don't go into the granite). This is a simple fix and only took a few minutes for them to install. HTH.

Thanks all for your suggestions and pictures. The granite company is coming to look tomorrow and I will update you on what the outcome is!!

Those are really interesting, Shelayne. I wonder if their sink system would be a help to all the people who post here about improperly mounted sinks falling down.
