mixing countertop materials

I've been following this forum for about a month now and have gotten a lot of really great information here. Here's my question... We bought our house last summer with the intention of adding to the existing kitchen and the master bath which is directly above the kitchen. The previous owner had done some upgrading to the kitchen a couple of years ago -- new granite countertop, ss sink, ss frig. The cabinets are awful! We'll probably replace them with maple cabinets -- still deciding about that. The granite is very "busy" (lots of motion) -- mostly gold with some black, grey and little flecks of purple/burgundy. I haven't been able to find another piece like it to find out the name. The grantie really is pretty so we intend to hold onto it but will be adding additional counters in the way of a breakfast bar and island. Also once we complete the renovation we will be able to use our beautiful 6ft butcher block table. I have been thinking about soapstone for the breakfast bar but also like the idea of a butcher block island top. My sister who has a pretty good design eye thinks that's too many different materials. What do you folks think?
