Sending out a plea~~~

Okay, all you kitchen decorators who have large islands

that has a cooktop (or nothing at all) in it. I am thinking about about 4'x7+' or so.... PLEASE SEND ME PICS ASAP so I can plead my case while DH is still drawing the plans. I want something big enough not only to eat off, but to serve food buffet style.

I don't have a picture yet, but if it helps your hubby to know, our island is going to be 4.5x7.5 feet. It will have a prep sink in it, but no cooktop.

    Good luck!

Phoggie, I'll be posting my completed kitchen later today so you can see lots of pix. Ours is 92"x42", with a prep sink at one end. Not only do we use it every day for breakfast and dinner, but when we entertain, I serve both appetisers and mains from the island (not to mention the use we get reading the weekend papers, being on the computer, etc etc...). It's a real focal point and we get tons of use from it. LOVE my big island.

Ours is bilevel, lower 5ft prep/baking area (no sink or cooktop, just lots of room for mixing and my big cooling rack). Upper is 9' 3" x 18.5" in the middle but is U shaped with angled corners so the last 2ft on each end is deeper, 42" deep at the peak. If I had smaller barstools (mine are huge Windsor style) we could seat 4 comfortably - the kids tend to eat up there esp. breakfast and lunch. Lower area works great for plating the food. We haven't entertained yet (still finishing the house) but if we moved the barstools (or had backless we could tuck under) it would be great for buffet. So the island is great, I just need to change my barstools!

Sorry, don't have a good picture of the overall island.

This kitchen island thread has a lot of pics of large islands. A lot of the people posted their dimensions as well. HTH!

No pictures, but ours is 4x7 and we love it. You probably don't want to go much wider because you want to make sure you can reach to clean the middle of it. We love the size--large enough to eat off of and perfect for buffets.

Ours is 4x6 and do love the large uninterrupted space.

Large islands are nice because of the uninterrupted space. You'll note that so far everyone that has repsonded basically has that uninterrupted space. Adding a prep sink can make them even more useful if that sink is sited correctly for the work flow. Cutting that space up with a cooktop may not serve your needs the best. Island cooktops are problematic for more than just ventilation and expense issues.

Our's is roughly 4X8 and will be a quick breakfast eating spot, homework and buffet serving area. We won't eat at it for meals.

Obviously it's not completed - at all. Just the plywood framing is visible in the photo and my stove top is installed because we had to throw out the old stove in order to put in the framing.
