Baker Chest

13 years ago

Sorry, my earlier post had the photo deleted somehow.

This Baker chest showed up on CL and I have an appointment today to see it.

{{!gwi}}

Price is $300. Anyone know what this would sell for in a showroom? Age?? Thoughts in general?? Thanks.

    A local antique store has it listed for $595 on eBay

    This still-tagged, Neo-classical, but similar chest is listed at $1995 on eBay.

    The MSRP is probably $4000 ish on these pieces, but no one ever pays MSRP.

    I recognize that piece. I saw it when I was younger and furniture shopping. I can place it 30 years give or take a few years and that looks like a good guess by the photo. I did find the ebay listing linked below where they estimate one at 50 years old. That might be pushing it for the sake of an "antique" sale -- I just don't know if it had been out that long when I saw it. I liked it then and still do.

    I can't say I remember pricing then, but I know I bought some Henredon end tables because they were a great buy. Think those were selling in the $300s then and I got them for a little over $100 on clearance. The Baker would have been above that price range because they were not a consideration for a starting out budget, so maybe twice that then ($450-600) and twice again if you could buy them new now (but you can't). I'd pay $300 for it if it was clean and in good condition. Looks a little dirty around the bottom of the legs -- room to work it down a bit. ;-)

    Good luck. Let us know.

    ETA -- the prices I am thinking of would have been sale tag prices on the floor, not MSRP. They could have been regular sale prices or clearance -- I can't say now, but as Pal said, no one pays the MSRP. :D

    Thank you so much, Pal and lasca. Your information is very helpful. I would never pay MSRP and can't imagine who does; (maybe government agencies, LOL) but it helps give me an idea of what a fair price would be. I was thinking this was perhaps a "rush out and grab it" item but it looks to be priced correctly as I learn more. The seller has been kind of unresponsive so not sure if my appt. today is for real. Generally, I get heart palpitations any time I see the word "Baker"......but don't want to pay too much.

    The dimensions listed are puzzling; 40" high, 32"wide, 19"deep. Don't see how that piece could be 40" high.

    Thanks; will update later.

    I think it could be a dresser 32" HIGH and 40" WIDE. The nine drawer version is 32" high. The piece I linked was actually a nightstand much smaller than your piece.
