Question for today 4/4

Have you ever taught a child to quilt? The next generation is so electronic, I think they need to go back to their roots a little. I have had two classes so far to teach children to quilt. One was a class for mothers and daughters the other class was my son and two of my grandchildren and a little girl from our church.

I have also taught shannonmomof4, and two of my younger daughters. Now my other daughter is asking to learn :-)

Our friend from church ironing.

Caleb showing off his blocks

Abby really getting into sewing

Scot using the sewing machine.

Shannon and I tying a quilt she made.

My youngest daughter has taken up sewing. She has made one comfort quilt by herself, but has helped me on several.

I am teaching my 7yo daughter to quilt & sew. She is a wiz at hand piecing pillows with running stitches and whip stitches.

She's also used the machine for piecing I Spy blocks together and birthing quilts...She just made a little one for our friends' new baby which she also machine quilted herself following painter's tape.

GS Thomas hemming fleece blankets for his 3 friends in very cold South Carolina Christmas of '07.

He has done other projects like crayon quilt and even hand sewed a tear in his Dad's favorite T-shirt!

It is great to pass on such a wonderful tradition...thanks, Vickie for the question.

I tought my grandson to design a quilt from a painting he had done in high school and helped him make his creation into a quilt. He was very proud of his achievement.
For many years I tought 4H and many young ladies how to sew but quilting wasn't in vogue then. Jayne

I was called in to give a couple of piecing lessons to a group of 4-H kids.

Even with two of us teaching, it was chaos, LOL. I think the 4-H instructor overestimated the time involved. She had never made a quilt, and wanted me to teach an 8-point star. I insisted we start with a simple nine-patch. Some of the children caught on easily, others not. There were also too many children (13) to adequately supervise. The promised 3rd teacher was a no-show.

If I ever do this again, it will be limited to 4 children at a time.

My daughter has started a t-shirt quilt and has four blocks ironed on to the interfacing stuff. That was about 14 months ago!!! She is my worst critic though with my quilts. She has a very good eye for color but I can't always find what I want with just Wal mart in town so unfortunately you buy with limited resources. Deanna

No, my daughter helped to teach me, however. LOL.

I have taken my g'children up to the sewing room and worked with them on making pillows and pillow covers. Then I spent three days with my g'daughter overseeing her making her first outfit. She was only about eight or nine at the time, and cut and sewed a pair of capri pants and blouse all by herself and did a wonderful job of it. She still talks about it and was so pleased when I made a quilt for her to find pieces of the fabric she used for the outfit.

I have offered to teach her to quilt, and hope someday she'll take me up on it.

I think it is wonderful to see the kids sewing or quilting. My DD is handicapped so she has never been able to do any kind of crafts.

I just learned to sew/quilt myself this last fall but I'm already planning on teaching my DD when she is older, she just turned 3.

Grammyp my toddler loves the pic of your daughters quilt, can you tell me the pattern she used?
