snakes in a pool

Pool has been completed for about five weeks now. I came home from work today in the hot Florida sun and jumped right in-- turned around to find myself face to face with a little legless friend.

Needless to say, I got out as fast as I could. The snake was swimming around trying to get out, so I held the skimmer pole out until he jumped in, and then I flung him into the grass.

I looked online and found out that it was a Southern ringneck snake. Small and with a single red ring around its neck. The website said that they are common to urban areas in Florida and "often fall into pools."

Yuck.

Yuck is right! So much for a relaxing swim in the pool! I thought is was disgusting when my kids found a dead alligator lizard in our pool... at least it was dead.

I had a ringneck in mine a few months ago and I also get baby black snakes occasionally. I have learned to look before I leap! Another forum member(kitchenshock) who lives a few miles from me had a water moccasin as a swim companion a while back--That would be scary! Get in the habit of not leaving rafts or floats in the pool when not in use because it will give them places to hide. I have had quite a few large, ugly spiders set up home in my pool float when I have left it in the water overnight.

That is a really good tip about not leaving rafts in the pool. I didn't realize water moccasins could find their way to pools-- guess I thought the chlorine would deter them. I definitely learned my lesson not to look before I leap! What a shocker...

It's part of our routine to walk around the pool and take a look before going in. We had a baby water moccasin in the pool last year. We have a cage, but little things can get in.

I had 1 that kept coming back. He finally got the idea.

I have had my pool for 13 years and this is the first year I have found snakes in it. One day it was a small black snake, then the next day I had two baby black snakes.

I am having trouble with spiders also. AND I am TERRIFIED of them. I also have trouble with yellow jackets. I can be relaxing on my float and they will land on me! not very relaxing worrying about getting stung!!I find about 15 in the pool each day. Any way to keep them away? Tina

Haven't had snake problems here in the Phoenix are, but do have some large spiders that seem to hide in the tiny cracks of the pool. Also have yellow jackets. Our daughter was on a float and was stung...doing nothing but floating. We're now very visual while in the pool.

OH....MY! The only thing I've found in my pool are tiny, tiny frogs (three in the past couple of months.) I'm so grateful there are no snakes in Hawai'i. I'd freak!

We use to get baby size brown/garden type snakes in our old pool all the time. It was an older neighborhood with lots of woods near by although not bordering our house. In our new pool the worst thing so far was a live rat, not a mouse a rat! Nobody wanted to get it out but my husband sucked it up and got it out. We're in a new construction area. The workers leave food everywhere so I think the rats come in for that. Yuck!

You are so funny. I decided to add to this thread again and was scrolling down and thinking, "What would be a nice way to say that?" Ha, ha! Sounds like the plot for another bad movie.

By the way, just the other night we had another MF snake in our MF pool! (water moccasin)

I was at the Feed and Ranch store yesterday buying spider spray, it's called demon and is fabulous. It also kills fire ants and scorpions, but while there I saw a yellow jacket trap. It kind of looked like a hummingbird feeder, but I guess it works by attracting them and trapping them inside. I asked the guys that work there if they work and he said he wasn't sure, but they sell alot.

New pool owner here -- we live in a wooded area in the midwest and have frogs and/or toads in the skimmer almost daily. I would have thought frogs would be able to survive and toads would die, but it's the opposite. I am always rescuing the little guys and returning them to the woods. Some are so waterlogged that I'm not sure they survive. Worst thing was a field mouse dead at the bottom of the pool. Yuck! Funniest thing was two dead frogs being whirled around in the pump basket. Looked like a froggie blender. I must have a sick sense of humor.

kristen...yikes! I'd checking into a MF snake fence if I had water moccasins.

LOL! We have a cage around our pool, but there are small cracks here and there that were cut in the concrete to keep it from cracking. The water moccasins are baby ones, but that doesn't mean I like them any more than the big ones.

The hard thing is that we have some dead spots that our light doesn't hit at night. We really have to take a flashlight to do a quick look around the pool before we jump in. This is only the 3rd time it has happened, but we check every time now!

We've had a ton of different critters in the pool. The grossest are the small field mice that get sucked into the vacuum and end up in the pump filter basket. We had frogs mating and even collected eggs so we could watch the tadpoles develop. It made for a great homeschool science project, LOL!

Anyway, this by far is the scariest. It's dead but I staged him for the pictures.

T square... I had to laugh, that movie's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the thread's title. Re: scorpions, one day my DH was at his desk in our old house and saw a movement out of the corner of his eye. It was a little scorpion right on the desk - the nerve ! Anyway, he was dispatched to the great Scorpion Home in the Sky. Spiders and snakes ...GOOD (to an extent). Scorpions... BAD.
We live in central Florida also.

I didn't know we have scorpions in Florida!! Great-one more thing to worry about when I am gardening.

We have found 2 snakes in our pool filter within the past few days (still alive). The first was large in size, the second small. We initially assumed that we had water moccasins / cottonmouths (GASP). Fortunately, after some internet research, and talking to people / showing pictures around town, we learned that we have brown snakes--essentially harmless. We drove them a few miles down the road and released them. I'm glad we a) learned our thus far discovered pool snakes are harmless & b) did no harm to them. Throughout our research, we learned that the primary reason snakes becomes trapped in pools is because they become thirsty, swim in for a drink, then can't get back out over the high edges.

I dont lawk spiders and snakes, and that aint what it takes to love me......lol

Yuck, yuck, yuck. Went away for weekend and came back to find a dead frog in the skimmer basket CLINGING TO THE METAL HANDLE... Like he was trying to get out. Ugh. This was not the first frog, but just the first frog I found that way....

At least no more snakes since the earlier incident... maybe they don't like the pool now that we've turned on the salt water generator!

I live in Hudson Co. NJ. Following Irene I found what I thought was about a 10 in stick at the bottom of the deep end of my pool. When I tried to get it with my skimmer, it swam into the drain at the bottom of the deep end. Now I don't know where it is or how to get rid of it. I'm comforted by the fact that NJ water snakes seem to be non-poisonous but this one likes 65 degree chlorinated water. How do I get rid of it? All advice welcome.

This is an old thread but I feel the need to comment. I have a lap pool with an automatic cover. Black widow spiders move in every winter and it is a constant battle during the swim season.
