kitchen design/floorplan help.....

I have posted only one other time before, but the plan isn't the clearest. I hope this will work for discussions sake.

Basically we have an eat-in kitchen, which is open to the great room (left) The entire dining/kitchen space is 27ft long by 13 wide. The pantry/laundry is the room to the south and the opening to right is our mudroom/2nd entry. So our kitchen is literally central to our home as we wanted it. The Dining(12x13ish has views of pond in back. Kitchen central approximately 15x13. Various pathways are the biggest challenges we face, but like I said we love the kitchen where it is!

What I can say as a positive is that I like the sink/dishwasher in an island. Other than that anything is up for discussion. Especially with Island size/placement, cabinet/appliance arrangement. Could I move the mud entry casment opening to get a better arrangement? Or the pantry opening? I would like to get a larger island. hmmm. I don't know how much room to allow for walkways if I make it face the great room with the side open to the dining. So hmmm. My biggest question is should I move the opening from the kitchen to enter up between dining/kitchen area and move the fridge? Here is a link to my album for the entire floorplan for those who need to see more, I just didn't feel comfortable posting. Thanks in advance

To pre-answer any other questions you might have...

We are a young family, 2 kids and hopefully more. I do most all the cooking. So 1 chef. I am not gourmet but currently have a gas range and am LOVING it. So fire away with suggestions PLEASE!

Two quick things I see... you'll will have to walk clear across the kicthen to put away dishes from the DW with it in it's current location. Most of your prep space is on the south side of the range. Though I like the frig location close to the eating area, it's not all that convenient for prep. I"m sure many will chime in with more exact suggestions then me.

Hmmmm.... My first impression is that you have too many points of entry into the kitchen. There are four, and every point of your triangle is intersected by a traffic pattern. Not good. How about you slide up the opening on the right to where the refrigerator is? That would keep traffic out of your work area. Then put the fridge to the right of the entrance from the utility room.

As remodelfla noted, your sink is far from the range. I suggest you get rid of the cabinetry on the left wall (behind the desk cabinet) and place a longer island in the center of your kitchen. This would give you a tighter work triangle and more counter space for prep (I doubt you will prep much on that left wall, it is too far from anything and looks like it would be the natural dumping ground.). Plus it has the added bonus of keeping people out of your work area.

The area to the left of the utility room entry would be a great spot for a large pantry or maybe a message center.

Definitely, move the opening. That will eliminate one path thru the kitchen & gain you a bit of counter & storage space. That will be a big improvement.

Instead of an island proper, think about extending the run of cabs on the left and have the sink face into the living room. You might want to do a raised bar to hide the sink? That would be aesthetically pleasing. Definitely more practical (and safer w/ young children) to not raise the bar.

Walkways--you need a minimum of 36''. With young children, I'd shoot for considerably more walkway space. (And, they grow up quick and they get big! My 17 YO, 6' plus son actually likes to cook and help out in the kitchen.)

Another suggestion--Consider going with deeper base cabs to give you more countertop space. Deeper cabs will give you more storage. Or you could use standard depth base cabs & space them out from the wall--gaining countertop real estate. Also, deeper uppers (15'' vs 12'') will maximize storage on the walls.
