Shelf liner

I grew up in a house with contact paper shelf liners AND contact paper ruffled trim on all the shelf edges. Anyone else remember that stuff? I remember my mother occasionally emptying out cabinets and cleaning the interiors.

When I got my first apartment in 1978 I just put things in the cabinets and swept the crumbs off the shelves when I saw them. Same thing with the house.

I now have my first brand new grown-up kitchen. My GC gave me the go ahead to fill the upper cabinets. Should I line the shelves? They are sleek, shiny and feel almost waxed.

Can we start a discussion of the pros and cons of shelf liner?

How did I get to be this old and not know the answer to this?
