winterizing turretted spa

they winterized my pool, and attached turretted spa..My question is the closing of spa..They completely drained the spa, and opened up ,i believe, the hydrostatic valve in the spa, and placed a 2"+- pvc standpipe with holes in it..It rained VERY heavy last night, and i looked in the spa and it was just about full...During the closing process,i asked why they just didn't leave it full after plugging the jets,etc..they said possible freezing might push the wall that faces the pool, and cause damage..But if the groundwater infiltrates like it has, won't the same issue be of concern?.FWIW, i have a solid safety cover that covers both pool and spa....
