Kitchen Cabinet Question

This may be a bit confusing, so if it is please say something and I will try to be more clear.

In our new kitchen I plan on haveing a 30 inch single built in oven mounted in an oven cabinet. Above the cabinet will be our cook top. My question is this... there are two vendors we are looking at for cabinets (I am a believer in shopping around)one person is telling me that for a 30 inch single oven I need a 30 inch oven cabinet, the other person is telling me I need a 36 inch oven cabinet. I am not sure which one it correct. If anyone can shed some light on this I would be really appreciative. I am just so confused.

Thank you,

MJ

It really depends on your oven. for instance, the 30" GE profile wall oven requires an opening in the cabinets that is between 25" and 25 1/4". Different brands require different rough-in openings in the cabinetry. I seriously doubt that ANY 30" wall oven requires a 36" cabinet though. Do a web search on your oven and look at the installation instructions....they give you the exact dimensions of your cabinets.

correction...the 30" oven needs a cutout that is between 28 1/2" and 28 5/8". The cutout I posted above is for a 27" oven. Sorry!!

This is the wall oven I am probably going to be getting:

    Here are the dimensions:
    Height: 28-1/4
    Depth: 23-1/2
    Width: 29-3/4

    Thank you

In almost all cases, a 30" oven cabinet is constructed for a 30" oven. The dimensions of the oven are slightly smaller thereby made to fit in a 30" cabinet.

I just re-read that... are you planning on putting a wall oven mounted under the counter with a 30" cooktop of some sort above it?

Exactly, we are planning on pulling the oven in under the counter with a 30" cooktop on top.

If you have cabinets on both sides of the oven/ cooktop, do you need a cabinet? If the cab ends are plywood, couldn't you just bridge the open space to carry the oven. Or build a base to sit the oven on? And a counter would bridge & carry the cooktop? No? Or am I missing something?

mjstraub... check the installation specs of the exact cooktop you want. When I looked into installing a 30" induction cooktop, I was going to need a 33" base. I believe that it's not the oven requirement that would necessitate the larger cabinet but the cooktop.

I was told by the HD cabinet lady that I needed a 30" cabinet for a 27" oven. So, at the least you may need 33", but I doubt you need 36.

I've looked at 30" ovens of just about every brand, and they're all made for 30" cabinets. The front of the oven is about 30", and the body of the oven is about 1.5" smaller to fit in the cabinet.

Still, you should check the specs on your oven.

Thank you all for the advice and tips. I was able to go onto the GE website and find the specs for the appliances that I picked out (would have never thought about that before, thanks for the tip). Both my cooktop and my oven are speced for a 30 inch cabinet. Acutally the oven that I chose was recommended for an under cooktop mount!

Thank you for all of the help, it is appreciated!
