Cabinet Sizing

Hi Everyone,

I finally pulled the trigger and ordered my cabinets last week.....now I'm unsure about one wall of cabinets.... there's still time to change it by this weekend, so I'm hoping to get some opinion/advice...

I have a L shaped kitchen and the short leg will be my sink wall (no window on this wall) My question is on the upper cabinets...right now I have a 30in wide, 30in high and 12in deep cabinet above the sink. This is flanked on either side by a 24in wide, 39in high and 15in deep cabinet. my ceiling is 8ft.

so the cabinet above the sink is 9in shorter and 3in shallower than the 2 on either side....will this look funny? should I just make it the same depth and/orlonger (which will have to be a 36in in height)also? I was afraid that if I make the cabinet above the sink 15in deep, it may get in the way? Not for me....but maybe for my husband when/if he does dishes? : )

any thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you!!

From what you are describing I think it will look funny.
Also, I can't even imagine a cabinet above a sink. I understand you don't have a window, but can you even imagine a cabinet in front of you taking up space when you are washing dishes.
Can you post a drawing of what you have ordered. THere are some fantastic people on this site who will come up with some great alternatives for you.

I don't think it will look funny at all. Here's a picture of the kitchen display that gave me the idea to do the same sort of thing. But my uppers are all 36 hight (8 ft ceiling), and I am going to have the lighted diplay shelf like shown in the picture. I figured those upper cabinets would be hard to reach anyway.

that's very different looking and interesting... if i had the room I might want to incorporate something like that on one of my walls. I have seen cabs above sinks --but only with the glass front. I like the glass clear or sanded front for those cabs. above the sink.

The depth variation will look fine. I'd be more concerned with the door widths. Are the 24s a single door or double door cabinet? Single doors can look OK (depending on door design) but they are very wide and open up far in to the space and become head bangers. The 2 door option will give you very skinny doors and can look odd as well. Plus you'll have a door swing towards the sink. Often, I will increase the cabinet over the sink by 3" on either side, so instead of a 30", do a 36" wide and go with two 21" cabinets that open away from the person standing at the sink.

However, take this with a grain of salt....I can't see your design, nor do I know about your door style...etc.

Here's a photo of a display in my showroom. 30" sink base with 36" cabinets above. single doors flank both sides so doors swing away from sink area...easier to get dishes. As you can see, you don't have to line up cabinets like pigeons...working out the most functional...and eye pleasing is the best way to design.

I currently have cabs above the sink. As long as they are either high enough or shallow enough, it is not a problem.

They need to be about the same hieght as they are above the cooktop (or range) otherwise they are in the way. I moved my sink over so for about a week I had regular height uppers above half the sink - I finally took everything out and took them down to get them out of the way - our kitchen is DIY and we are doing it a bit at a time so sink got moved before we dealt with the upper cabinets.

I am going with no uppers around my sink - but that is because I love the look. I am not showing that picture to my husband - he would love that look. He'd have wall to wall uppers if it was up to him, I'd have no uppers if it was just up to me.

Ps from Kompy: Note in my pic above, the cabinet w/ glass doors is 12" deep and the plate rack is 9" deep...but they all align across the bottom of the cabinets. This looks nice and gives plenty of room to work at the sink.

I also think it will be fine, and agree with Kompy, look at the proportions of everything.

For what its worth I have had two kitchens both with cabinets straight across over the sink: in one kitchen the cabinet height was 24" above the counter (thats what I have now) and in the other, it was only 18". One of us is 5'5", one of us is 6'1" and neither of us has had a problem with either configuration. You can't bang your head on a cabinet that is lower than your face :) These kitchens are small and it would have both reduced storage and looked odd to have a super short cabinet over the sink (since its not centered on anything).

MichelleMarie, this layout is really the best option I have for my kitchen. I have posted for layout advice before and was given a lot of great feedback! : )

Numbersjunkie thank you for the picture! I'm very visual, so when I couldn't actually see a real setup with the depth differnce...I got nervous!! : ) I do like the look! I think I may change my sink cabinet from 30" to 36" high, but keep the depth at 12.

Plumberry, I think I might consider the glass for the cabinets above the sink too...

Kompy, I have essentially the same door style as in the picture except the raised sides are a little wider! in dark brown and basically that picture is or will be my sink wall : )the two 24" cabs are 2 doors...I felt that the door would be too large if I kept it as a single door... you think it wouldn't be too large?

Cathy & Palimpsest, my biggest concern when I considered getting the 36" for above the sink...I was afraid that it may get in the way when you may have to lean over the sink...with me since I'm short...I don't have a problem..haha

I think the photos by kompy and numbersjunkie look wonderful. My mind just doesn't work work without photos and what they posted wasn't what I was thinking.
I hope you do something as pretty as what they posted!

    Michellemarie....so do I... : )

Kompy..I think I may go with your suggestion and and make the 2 flanking cabs 21" with 1 door...and glass doors for the shorter cab above the sink....what do you thnk about keeping it shallower at 12" deep or since it's much shorter...I might as well add the additional 3" in depth?

    Thanks everyone!!!

    Hi Roxy. Great!

I think I would keep it at the 12" depth (how tall is the cabinet over the sink?). But keep in mind, if full overlay, the doors will only open up at around 90 degrees and may even hit the adjacent deeper cabinets.

Hi Kompy! The cabinet over the sink is 30" tall and the flanking cabinets are 39". Thank you for pointing out the issue with the door hitting..they are full overlay...so maybe I should make it the same depth?
