Pool problem. I give up.

I have a Zodiac G4 Barracuda cleaner. My dedicated vacuum line is dead and has been since I have owned the house. I am using one of my 2 skimmers as a vacuum line. When I set my drains to vacuum I get air in my pump basket. Not completely full of air. It never loses prime but it has quite a bit of air sloshing around in their. When I am just using my pool and have all line open the air is gone and everything runs fine, but in this operation I do not have enough suction to move the Barracuda. Question is can the air cause damage to parts? Again it never loses prime, but quite a bit of air.

What do you mean "when you set your drains to vacuum?" If you are using the skimmers for the pool sweep, you will need to block one of the skimmers to divert flow to the other unless you have a valve for each skimmer.

If you have 2" suction on the skimmer and you are dropping the sweep into the suction port, the smaller sweep hose is bottoming out on the fitting under the skimmer and causing blockage.

Have you tried blowing out the dedicated sweep line?

If everything runs fine without air and then it cavitates when you put a suction load on it, you may have a suction leak.
