Cutouts - Plan for change?

We're in the planning stage of our kithcen remodel. We're still undecided on our coutertop surface (granite or corian are most likely), but we're getting lots of input from this forum.

Today's question is about the cutout for the cooktop. We had just about decided that we were going to keep our 18-year old KitchenAid gas cooktop (KGCT365T) because it still works well, and looks pretty good. Would we be making a mistake, though, if down the road, after getting the countertops installed, we (or a future owner) needed/wanted to replace the cooktop, and the cutout needed to be different. I'm guessing that this is more of an issue with granite.

The current cooktop's cutout spec is 33" w x 18-3/4' d. In looking at both gas and induction cooktops on the market today, it seems as though most, if not all, of the gas or induction (another decision!!) units require a somewhat bigger cutout.

Have any of you faced this, and if so, how did you make your decision?
