Help with flooring (pics)

Any advice for flooring would be appreciated. Our cabinets are Thomaville, Belgrade Doors in Maple, Chocolate finish. Counters are Blue Pearl GT. The pic below is a sample of the Chocholate finish (although not our doors) with Blue Pearl Granite (sorry for the poor quality). Walls will be Olympic Steeple Grey. As you can see, I lean towards darker shades, so was going to do a lighter flooring, problem is, now that I am looking, I don't really like the lighter flooring. We get a good bit of light in the kitchen, which really helps. And the granite reflects a lot of light too. Anything wood is out due to our dog heavy household (involved with dog rescue), so it needs to be something pretty durable. We are going for I guess a "transitional" look. We looked at some 12x24 rectified tiles, but the only ones I could find in a gloss finish (which I prefer over the matte) were in shades of cream, which clash terribly. Any advice?

Why does the cream clash? The blue of the counter tops and the brown of the cabinets are a common pairing for colours and so what is in the cream that is clashing. If you like the tiles, would changing your paint colour help in bringing everything together better?

It was the silver in the granite that the cream seemed to clash with. I did like the glossy finish of the tiles, but would have preferred them in a grey. The only grey tiles I found were a matte finish. And even in that, I preferred the darker grey, of course. Which was more of a charcoal and probably too dark for the already dark finishes I have going on. I am open to options other than tile, but not sure what else everyone out there is using that is dog friendly and would work in this space. I like the porcelain tiles that look like wood, but plan on doing the floors in the rest of the house in those as phase II of this project later on and want the kitchen to have a different flooring since they will be dark.

We recently remodeled our kitchen and went with black & white so this flooring may be too dark for you but here are a few shots of what we did.

The floor is Montauk Black slate 24x24 tiles.
If this doesn't work for you check out other types of slate or porcelain tiles.

I needed dog friendly flooring too. The flooring I ended up with has a lifetime warranty with a ceramic bead finish. It's been down about four months and there are no marks, very easy to clean and also easy on your feet.

There is a slight silver metallic haze on and really accents SS appl and the bling in counter tops.

You might be able to find a dealer in your area. The company is a division of Metro Floor...

The style I got is called Aspen Metallic.....color is Zuni.
Price is in the vicinity of $6 sq ft.

willtv: I've actually seen your flooring and mentioned it to DH when we were looking! I thought I read that yours is honed slate? I do love it, but again, dark.

wizardnm: Checking out your link now. Thanks!

KayceeFL, The slate is what's called "Natural Cleft". As I thought, too dark.

Here's a link to the place where I bought the slate. They have many colors of slate as well as a large selection of tile.

By the way wizardnm's floor is really cool!

I was thinking slate when I saw your counter and cabinet selections. Very pretty granite. It would be very durable and easy to care for with your "dog heavy" home.

wizardnm - can you tell us something about putting that flooring down? was it DIY? did you hire someone to do it? was it a difficult process? take a long time to do?

did you buy it locally or online?

I had my GC put down the floor because he was removing my old flooring and also some carpet in the living room. It was very easy and just about anyone could DIY it. You need to rent a 100# roller to roll the seams. There is no glue on the old floor...it glues to itself. It took a day to install over 700 sq ft...most of the time was for measuring and cutting. You just want to make sure you put it down on an even surface. My floor went down before any cabs or appl were in place, so it runs under everything. It's very tight and waterproof...safe even for a puppy!

As soon as my kitchen was done, my GC ordered and installed it (dif pattern) in his own kitchen, he liked it that well.

There is a product at HD called Allure that is made by the same company. Less expensive but feels thinner too...

I just had new floors put in my house and I chose for dog friendly. That was a major factor in picking the floor. I looked at different floors for about a year. I looked at and tested about every brand of laminate on the market. I took some Alloc, Pergo and others and let a little winter snow melt on them by a door. The next morning the Alloc was warped at the seams (not good with dogs!). I then started looking at sheet vinyl because of my dog. I just kept worrying about scratches and water on the laminates. I brought home many samples of sheet vinyl and one day the right one appeared! It is Mannington sheet vinyl and has a low sheen coating on it. It is not slick at all and is beautiful, durable and easy to clean. Oh, it has a lifetime warranty and made in the USA! Here it is:
