Stumped on Backsplash and ...

I'm reposting this with the hope of getting more suggestions/ideas. I'm totally stumped on this and it's over a year since we redid the kitchen and I'm getting tired of the unfinished space behind the countertop. I find it difficult to conceptualize without seeing so pictures will be welcome. Photoshoppers feel free to help out please. TIA.

Okay chiommy...I'm going to attempt to help here, but don't expect much, as a designer, I am not!

How about pulling a lighter color from your granite and finding a tile in that color? I think white would contrast way tooo much. Is that a reddish color I see in your granite? I was thinking of matching that color, whatever it is....I like contrast so I would stay away from a dark tile, as your granite is, overall, dark in appearance. However I don't know if pulling this "reddish" color out would throw off your other colors in your kitchen..

Good Luck and I hope others chime in too!

Had to come back and tell you to check out the thread "Backsplash Random Oblong Subway Stone Look". I think that would look really nice in your kitchen!

I really considered using DM in my sons bathroom and found that the Edilcoughi Rocks series looks really good with this. I used the above tile in my sons shower- it was the black multicolored tile(it was not black!). Slightly resembles slate but don't let that scare you. It has a mosaic too which would look fabuous with your appliances and cabinets. I used 927 light pewter grout. Here is a picture of the larger tile, it is hazy and dirty.

Thanks Kitchenaddict. The granite is usually described as a cranberry colored stone with slight hints of blue and grey. I've always loved the Jeffrey Courts Fire and Ice ever since I first saw it on this forum but it's quite expensive and I'm not sure I can justify the expense.

Thanks peytonroad, I'll look into the tile above though it may be too dark for my kitchen. Keep the ideas coming. TIA

I'm not certain what your style is exactly, but you mentioned that it is a "cranberry colored stone" and I see other deep red colors in your home. You could do a cranberry colored glass backsplash that coordinates with the cranberry in the stone.

Some ideas (I have no experience with these sites personally):

    glasstileoasis.com merlot basketweave mosaic

    glasstilesetc.com red glass matchsticks mosaic

    oceanside glasstile.com red mosaic

Oceanside glasstile also seems to allow you to create your own mosaic blend, so you could blend slate with glass tiles.

Another mosaic design tool is available online at DalTile. You might just play around with it, and then order a few color samples of the tiles you might like.

Chiommy . . . are we the same person?? I finished my kitchen 2 years ago and still struggling over the b/s. I don't have an answer for you, but my granite is VERY similar to yours (they called in Crystal Mahogany, but have been told it's just a fancy name for Tan Brown); as are my cabinets. I also loved the look of Fire & Ice. Have you checked out HD lately? They carry some Jeffrey Court tiles that have glass but much cheaper than F&I.
We are going with a light honed travertine on a diagonal with metallic copper glass accents placed randomly and a design behind the stove with the glass.

I have tan brown granite, which has similar colors to yours and used tumbled copper slate for my backsplash:

Thanks for all the replies. Eastbaymom, I did not find the daltile design tool user friendly or maybe I'm just techno challenged.

Cruisedirector, I'm sure my kitchen is smaller than yours as my kitchen is probably one of the smallest on this forum. This makes it difficult to pick a backsplash as the ones I love will make my kitchen too dark like Terriks' backsplash above which looks lovely in her kitchen but will be too dark in mine. I'll go to Home Depot this weekend to check out the Jeffrey Court tiles that they carry.

Terriks, I like your backsplash but it's probably too dark for my kitchen but I'll try and get some samples and see if they'll work in my kitchen.

Large format tile like those from Porcelanosa?

I also have warm cabinets with a dark granite counter. Since ours is a stone with lots of movement, we opted for a quiet backsplash. It's an off-white field tile with SS-clad ceramic accent tiles. Several photos of the finished work shown here:

cross stitch - I love your cherry blossom tile. Where did you get it? Thanks.

Thank you, countrygal. It is in the Artistic Elements Metalworks series from American Olean. The mural tile behind the cooktop is 12x12" while the dots are 2x2". Trim and border pieces are available which we did not use. Comes in SS and bronze.
