which white for ceilings?

We are moving into a house that has ceilings painted the same color as the walls, which are a brownish beige color. We are going to have the ceilings painted WHITE.

Should we go with a super bright white? Do you have any recommendations? We typically buy Dunn Edwards paint but I am open to other brands. The house tends to be on the darker side so we hope that by painting the ceilings white it will brighten it up a bit.

Thanks!

I have SW Extra White flat on my ceilings (SuperPaint). It blends well with both warm and cool wall colors. It's the "off the shelf" color which is used as a base color for light to medium tints.

I like the SuperPaint because it covers and blends very well. Some ceiling paints do not cover well and you see lines where you have stopped and started each section. That doesn't happen with the SuperPaint.

I personally don't like really white ceilings. What about going lighter but not all the way to white?? Another thought is a light gray color like Ellen Kennon's Gustavian Gray. Several posters have that color here and it looks a bit like a cloud in the sky...or so they say. I am trying to remember who it was that had GG ceilings and light brown/beige walls...I'll search around my files because it was so beautiful that I may have kept it.

If white is definitely what you are looking for, I would do something like Navajo White! ;c)

Good Luck and post pictures if you can

I was going to go with BM Navajo White. Ended up using Ace Royal paint in Light Navajo White but looks just like BM Navajo White and the SW Navajo White IMO. I figured it was going on the ceiling and the paint was cheaper. I would've probably went white if we weren't planning on having crown installed. I wanted there to be a difference in color.

sheesharee, I know I already told you but just wanted to say again how pretty your room turned out! Great job!

I think I remember the poster who had the GG ceiling and beige walls...I believe it's caminnc but I can't locate her photo right now. If she's reading along, maybe she'll post. I also forgot about amyrsq's pale blue ceilings which are also gorgeous.

sheesharee- what color are your walls in the pic you posted?

Loveto, why do white when you can do this?

    Or this?

Most of mine are SW Muslin and it's a creamier white...not much blue in it, which so many whites contain. I like a softer look anyway.

um....if I say Ceiling White, I don't mean it to be sarcastic! That's what we use 99% of the time. On the few occasions where we've opted for some color, it's ceiling white with about a cup or 2 of the wall color mixed in - just enough to marry them. I generally prefer white ceilings, though. Dunn Edwards is not available here but I would ask if they have a specific ceiling white. We use the Benjamin Moore c.w. Ceiling paints are specifically designed to be ultra hiding and not show any roller marks.

Thanks for the kind words, Lindy. Here is a pic of our breakfast room, just after we moved, so 'xcuse the mess. :-)

There are better pics of the house, but this seems to show the pale gray ceilings against the super white trim better. It is indeed Ellen's Gustavian Gray.

Beautiful Amy! It just looks so soft and relaxing with the pale gray! I still can't find the photo I was thinking of for Caminnc's living room. She also had the GG and tan walls that looked fantastic.

Nothing wrong with white though....just a personal preference I guess.

I used a pale blue on one of my ceilings (and I love it!) and most people don't even notice it until I point it out! My dh didn't even realize it months after I painted (and he was there when I painted it, LOL!). I currently have "ceiling white" in most of my rooms and as I repaint the walls in those rooms, I'm painting the ceilings something other than white.

Lindy - Thank you! I'm happy with it too. So glad I didn't stick with my original game plan. (drapes and paint.eek.)

Lovestoshop - The walls are BM Shelburne Buff. The room gets a lot of light and I wish it looked like it does at night during the day hours. Even with that, we still really like it.

what does it look like at night w/o all the light? In the pic it looks like a beige with yellow tones. Is that how it really looks? I like it against your white moldings.

Two steps up the color strip from the wall color works well.

sheesharee - Shelburne Buff looks a lot like Tobacco Road - very pretty.

If we paint our ceilings regular ceiling white (or what ever Dunn Edwards calls it) would you paint semi-gloss? Also, if the room has crown moldings would you paint it the same color white as the ceiling or a brighter white?
    Thanks!

Randita - Thanks! Yes they are very similar. I have a sample of TR road also. Don't know that it's THE OFFICIAL Tobacco Road but it looks like the pictures I see posted here.

Lovetoshop - If it were me I'd paint the ceiling flat. Trim in semi gloss. I'd want the crown to stand out so I'd go brighter.

Amysrq - What color are the walls of the picture you posted? Great color.

Thanks! It's called Amy's Sarasota Sand. It's an Ellen Kennon color. Never thought I could be so in love with "beige!" :-)
