Backsplash design help

FINALLY, I have found materials for my backsplash - took me long enough, eh?? The white onyx is perfect coloring and I just love it. I envisioned using the 3x6 subway for the field with the pillowed (2x2) on a 45degree turn for detail behind cooktop, framed by the plaza moulding. For the oven wall and butler's I would just use the subway.

The salesperson at AnnSacks recommended doing the whole cooktop wall in the pillowed tile because of the windows. Of course she did, the cost per square foot will knock your socks off and can't even believe I'm considering buying 4 sqfeet!!! She says this way I wouldn't have to spend on moulding pieces because a transition wouldn't be needed. I think this might be a little too much of the same material (she showed me a picture of someone who used just the pillowed everywhere).

What do you think?? Can I get away with the subways even though the windows are there?

BTW, the pics from annsacks website make the tiles look much more gray, in person, they are a more milky cream.

I think it will go very nicely. I like the idea of using the pillows as a an accent above the stove--not for the whole wall--in other words, I like your idea! Maybe someone else can mock this up for you.

I know what you mean about the Ann Sacks prices!

That is gorgeous, and I think it looks great with the granite. I agree with Kelleg about putting the pillowed just behind the range.Although I'm no expert at backsplashes.

BTW- Thanks for that info on the light fixture. Great price at Lowes, looks great with your bell jar lanterns. Your almost there. When do you move in?

Thanks for chiming in kelleg and positano!!! This helps me trust my gut - rather than someone who might just want to sell more deathly expensive tile. Thank goodness for GW!

I know this is a huge splurge, but the idea actually came from DH....can you believe it?? He said he couldn't/wouldn't do glass, but saw some onyx. gasp..."sure honey, no problem, I'll take a look at the onyx!" he still doesn't know how much the pillowed tiles are (he told me not to tell him :) The good thing is, the subway tile is at least competitive with other sources of onyx since my builder gets a discount at Ann Sacks and it's not too much square footage.

off to sing the girls to sleep. moving in 2 weeks!!! (hopefully, I feel like I keep saying "2 more weeks" argh!)

I also like the idea of the pillowed tile behind the range only. It's beautiful tile!

I used honey onyx subway tiles for my backsplash and love it.

If you decide to go with a transition around the windows, you could use the pencil liners in onyx.

The Tile Shop is about half the price of Ann Sacks. ;)

This is going to be breathtaking! Those are quite the find. Love, love, love the subways. I agree with not doing the whole wall in the pillows. I'm confused about why the windows make a difference, unless she's worried about the subways having to be cut?

Thank you, Ikremodel, sterlingsilver and rhome!!

sterling: thanks for the Tile Shop rec, but unfortunatly they only have honey onyx, which is too yellow for my granite. The white onyx has been so hard to find. all of my builder's wholesale sources can only get it in 12x12! I'm not sure why it's so hard to get. I also like your idea about using a pencil liner around the windows.

rhome: I'm not afraid to have my tile guy do the subway cuts. He has done a fantastic job on the rest of the house, so I'm sure the little spots along the window would be fine. My guess is that she was trying to avoid using multiple textures on a limited size wall?? who knows, but I don't care anymore 'cause I'm following my GW friends' advice instead!!!

i also like your idea better!!! just another vote to make yourself feel better. those tiles are going to be stunning! when will they go in????

thanks, gglks! should be able to get the tiles installed beginning of next week, so before we move in which will be nice :)

I think the tiles are beautiful and will look STUNNING in your kitchen. I absolutely love those subway tiles and totally agree with you on the pillow tiles.

They look gorgeous together, but if you look at photos of white onyx it has areas of orange gold in it you might not like with your granite. I would ask at Ann Sacks if they can provide a digital photo first of a sample group of the tiles you might be getting. Not sure if it would include that color or not, or if they have been edited to exclude those colors which makes it more expensive.

Just had to share some pictures I took today! We move on Thursday, so no idea when I'll be back on GW since we don't even have our internet hooked up yet(sniff, sniff...I'm gonna go through withdrawal!). As soon as we are moved and our table and counterstools arrive, I'll post the official finished kitchen!

It's not grouted yet (will use alabaster color grout), so look beyond the red spacers!! I was a moron and didn't order enough of the moulding tiles for the windows, but thankfully they will be here on thursday.

thanks again to everyone for confirming my design idea!

Oh my goodness, mairin, I can't believe how gorgeous that is. I thought the sample pics of the tile were "pretty" and thought it would look "really nice" but this is spectacular... really, really special! I can't imagine one single change. It's meant to be there with those cabinets, that granite, THAT BACKSPLASH, and those amazingly perfect windows. Best wishes for an "easy" move and 100 happy, healthy years with your family to make memories in your beautiful kitchen!!

WOW! Can't wait to see the final pics. That is really a unique and special backsplash.

It turned out wonderfully. Absolutely beautiful.

stunning! I can't wait to see the tiles once they are grouted!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!!! the pillows are sooooooooooo great!!!! so unique but still has that classic feel!

    Exquisite. Truly.

Oh my goodness, I have no words. It is absolutely fabulous. I loved the sample but it barely does it justice. Your kitchen is stunning!!! Good luck on your move.

Another "oh my goodness" here. It is really really BEAUTIFUL and you were so on the money with your design. If it looks this beautiful with spacers.... just imagine it grouted! A huge congratulations to you on both your gorgeous kitchen and move. How exciting that is for your family!

That is so beautiful!! I love it!!

Wow Mairin, it is truly spectacular. Good luck with your move in.
BTW, what is the color on the far wall under the window in the room you see through the doorway of your last photo?

Your Revere Pewter in your Kitchen is also lovely and rich. It makes me want to give it another try.

Wow! Thanks for all the glowing compliments! never thought I'd get so many with all those silly spacers in place (what's with the red? maybe it's easier for the tiler to spot them??).

katienic: The color you see is BM Cabot Trail - it's technically the small living room or sitting area, but it will soon house our 'playroom'!! we're out of money for furniture anyway - LOL! I love the color and how it looks next the the revere pewter in the hall. Here's another shot of cabot trail looking into and from the dining room - not much wall space in that room due to windows and doorways.

    Simply gorgeous.

    Mairin,
I LOVE what you've done... what's so great is that you let the onyx shine with just adding a beautiful simple pattern. Sometimes you have to let something so gorgeous just be amazing all by itself. That's a valuable design lesson that I'm still learning. Congrats!

Wow!!! That is just beautiful! Your whole house looks lovely. Happy moving day tomorrow!

I love your kitchen! In fact, itâÂÂs my inspiration kitchen. My vision is similar to yours, except on a smaller scale; e.g., espresso cabinets, granite counters, and your pendants. Your backsplash is smashing! IâÂÂve never seen white onyx in anyone elseâÂÂs kitchen. Your choice to let it âÂÂspeakâ on its own with just a simple design was perfect. Congratulations! Could you please name your granite and any other details youâÂÂre willing to share? Thanks!

Thanks again to everyone for the 'moving day well wishes'!!!

debbie: I am beyond flattered that you like my kitchen so much - especially with all the fantastic ones on this site that have influenced me! The onyx idea came originally from DH who saw it as a counter in a powder room at a friend's house. I also have always drooled after gglks' backsplash. After tracking it down (this was the tough part since it's a rare stone) and putting it with my samples, I was in love!! The backsplash was a huge splurge, but was the perfect combo for the granite. the granite is Bianco Antico and the cabs are custom walnut with java stain. I have my list compiled of all the details for the finished kitchens blog - my hope is to post in the next couple weeks! I'll be off GW for at least a few days during the move process, but if you have any other specific questions please feel free to email me!

Mairin...I LOVE your backsplash. It is beyond words.

I also really, really love your adjacent room with the dark paint and white wainscotting. With that gorgeous backdrop, you don't even need furniture!!! LOL
