Contemporary lighting with transitional DR?

Last time I was at Ikea I saw this hanging light fixture.

Now the description says "light source is sold separately." So I would have to ask someone there what is this light source. Now, again, I would not get this until after I get a job. And maybe, not even get it. It's only $24.99 but not sure how much the "light source" part is. Is this too odd of a piece to work in the dining room? The room I am using as a dining room is not really a dining room and has odd placement of ceiling lights. One is a flush ceiling light and the other is a cheapo ceiling fan with light kit. Right now I am just ignoring these fixtures as if they are not there, although I run the fan now since I have my portable air conditioner (floor model on wheels) running in this room now,

Or would something like this one from Ikea look better - also says "light sources sold separately - 3pcs."

The solid fixture might block view of art. Or just forget the whole thing? Again, not right now - waiting to get a job first.

Light source = The light bulb.

Thanks dilly - yes, of course. I guess I should make some more coffee. I got up too early this morning - about 6am. But this was good because here in Phoenix that is a cool time of day - it was 70 degrees out. So I was able to repair my broken umbrella. And take apart my home made water feature. This urn I am using as a water feature, leaks. So I polyed the inside and hope that does the trick. I will find out tomorrow when I put the pump back in with the water.
Would it be worth it taking down that flush ceiling light and then swagging over a chandelier to center of table?

I pasted the chandy's in - not sure about exact size.

Wouldn't you first need permission from your "landlord"? Landlords are funny about tenants doing their own electrical work like that.

The flush mount fixture is probably going to have a large hole in the ceiling and that would have to be covered too since the swag lamps usually do not have big plates.

In this case I believe you also need a light kit for the fixture to work. My friend ordered the exact fixture. There's nowhere to put a light bulb!

Well, if these chandys do not be to be hard wired (or I could add a plug), I could leave the ceiling lights as is and just hang the chandy.
At least that way I do not have to worry about the landlord.

kitchen, that is what I was thinking when the web site said - need to buy light source. Maybe that's why these are so cheap - it's not a light yet until you buy the light sources. The hard part about shopping at Ikea, is getting someone to help you. Plus the items are on display on the 2nd floor but for sale on the 1st floor. Thanks

"Adding a plug" would fall under the category of doing your own electrical work. You would need permission if you are renting.

Personally I would not try to mess with stuff like that unless you really, really know what you are doing. There is also the chance that a previous occupant did their own electrical work and just 'winged it'. You may come across a hot Green and *POOF*. I am serious. It happened to a friend of mine. Also you wouldn't want to do it incorrectly and have something bad happen to the next person who worked on the project.

I am sorry, you do not sound like you can handle doing electrical work. I am not saying this to be mean. There is a safety issue involved if you are going to be attempting to 'put in a plug' or wire a fixture into a new spot.

Call your "landlord" or hire an electrician.

No, I meant add a plug to the fixture, not to the house. This way I will run fixture cord to wall and then down to standard outlet already there.

And I have changed out lighting fixtures before in my WI house. But, here, in this rental I won't do that.

It's a mini chandy from Lamps Plus. Maybe this style would look better with my stuff plus it is not a hard wire fixture.

    1. Note that on the Ikea site, the item description says "This product requires assembly."
A LOT of assembly (basically it's a box of cut triangular pieces), and the folks who've posted over at ApartmentTherapy.com say the instructions are really terrible.

    2. I really don't think it goes with your decor.

pammy, you mean the 1st one? Yes, I saw the box it came in - a pretty small triangular box. And if they don't have them strung together already, it might make more sense for me to make my own chandy. I am liking the crystal and amber chandy better for my room plus I can use it in other rooms if I move.

There is nice stuff at Ikea, but both Ikea lamps would probably look cheap when surrounded by the lovely things you have.
