Please give feedback on layout!

Hi all,

I am in the planning stages of my kitchen...

This is the layout that I have come up with for my 13'8 x 13'9 space.

As of now there are cabinets on the 9' wall and no cabs on the 13'8 wall. there is also a penninsula about where the stove is that comes out 9'.

I really want a large island (4 x 5'6") and the only way I can acheive this is by eliminating cabinets on top wall. I am afraid that this space may not have enough wall cabs. I will have 2-24" or 27" with glass doors, 1 21" open cab, 1 36" refer cab and 1 33 w".

Tell me what you think.....

I think I like the first one better. I don't know what that white square is though, so I'm not positive.

In the first one, you appear to have landing space on both sides of the refrigerator, the refrigerator door doesn't open into the doorway, it's on the perimeter where snackers can get to it w/o getting in the way of someone working in the kitchen while it's still close enough to be easily accessed from the working area.

You have a good flow from refrigerator to sink to range. But, where's the MW? Do you plan to have one? I recommend putting it next to the refrigerator b/c, like the refrigerator, you want it accessible to both kitchen and snackers and you also want it convenient to where the food will be reheated or cooked (like frozen veggies).

The only real negative I see is the outside door placement. Someone coming in from the outside will probably cut right through the main work area. Can it be moved? I think I'd rather see it at the other end of the wall ("north" in the pic in your first post).

OR, perhaps you could swap the counter run & empty wall. But, you'll have much less room for cabinets on the shorter wall (unless it could be extended) plus (1) it's always easier to vent on an exterior wall, (2) it's nice to have window over the sink, and (3) it's nice to be able to look out the window when seated at the island.

    Other comments...

Your clearances look pretty good everywhere except b/w the island and the cabinets...and that's only b/c you have that traffic going through there.

Your DW will open into the outside doorway if it's left of the sink. If it's right it may block the the aisle (and with that traffic....)

Think about where you will be storing your dishes, glasses, and flatware. Do you want them convenient to the DW or the eating area?

    That's it for now! HTH!

    thanks for the feedback buehl!

The "white box" in both layouts is the pantry.

I am struggling on my refer and DW placement.

I want my refer to go next to the empty 9' wall, but it is hinged on the right hand side so there would be no landing spot to the left. that leaves me with putting it next to the doorway. If I put it in between pantry and cabs there still is the landing issue.

The outside door is actually going into the laundry room which does have outdoor access but is rarely used.

If I move the DW to the right of the sink I will have a silly 6" cab next to the range. Maybe that would be good to put a pullout for oil and spices???

Thanks for all the suggestions...I get tunnel vision sometimes!

If the outside door is rarely used, then I would leave the DW on the left side of the sink so you don't have the potential for blocking the aisle b/w the island & the sink. The only issue now with that location is how far will it be from dish storage and does it matter to you?

If the island is no more than 4' in front of the pantry or refrigerator, it can act as landing space as well. I still think that I like the refrigerator in the middle b/c it will encourage snackers to go around the back of the island to get to the refrigerator rather than in front of it where you'll be working. But, that's up to you. Either location will work well enough.

Cabinets...I would consider more drawers and fewer standard base cabinets. Yes, you may need a couple of standard base cabinets (w/doors & shelves that may or may not be full extension pull outs), but think about more drawer banks.

Window...can you modify the window? I'm partial to windows that are at counter level w/the countertop material running right up to the window. It gives you a little more space behind the sink for faucet, soap dispenser, etc. plus I think it gives you a better view and more natural light.

Can the 9' wall come down? If so, how would you feel about 24" cabinets in the front (facing the range & sink) and 18" or 24" deep cabinets on the back to give you more storage room, The overhang would be another 15", so you would have a 64-1/2" deep (24" + 1.5" + 24" + 15") island. It would give you a wonderful workspace! Just something to think about!
