Wanting to do an outdated countertop update

This is going to sound crazy and people will probably try to talk me out of it, but hear me out.

In the near future, we have plans to do a kitchen 'facelift'. We don't have the resources to do a kitchen remodel at this time, because our plans involve knocking down a wall, removing a door, adding cabinets, in addition to the usual kitchen remodeling stuff. So, we've decided to do some minor things to make it a bit more attractive in the meantime. Our plans include stripping the cabinets and either staining or repainting, replacing hardware, and replacing the countertops.

We currently have laminate countertops and would be using the laminate sheets, rather than an a complete countertop. Our current countertops are in ok condition, but are starting to show their age in places and are a boring/unattractive color (a light cream with black/gold specks).

The one aspect of the counters that we rather like is the trim. Along the edges, instead of laminate trim, we have a chrome/almuminum/silver colored metal trim piece. We think it looks rather neat/unique and would like to get a replacement for it, in case we can't propertly take it off when we do the new countertop. However, I haven't a clue what it would be called and can't find anything remotely like it on the internet.

The quick description of this is pretty simple. It has a finished (no rough edge) beveled angle on the inside part (the part that touches the top of the counter) and acts like a lip. It's been wrapped around the countertop edge and is nailed to the bottom with finishing nails. Also, it's completely possible that this was a complete DIY look and has never been common or had a particular product for this use.

I know this is probably a completely outdated look, but I think it would look pretty interesting in a brushed finish with a dark blue or gray countertop. Any thoughts are appreciated.
