I have used regular computer paper. You have to be real careful when pulling it out, though. You can also use tissue paper or a store bought item called "golden" something something. This paper comes in a variety of widths and is gold colored; this is the most highly recommended brand. It tears easily, and water will wash away any remaining pieces.

Whatever you use, make your stitches teeny-tiny!!

When I'm not comfortable doing free-motion quilting without a design, I use Sulky Solvy stabalizer, a water soluble product. I draw directly on it and pin it to the quilt. When I'm finished sewing I trim the excess with my applique scissors and throw it the washing machine. Nothing to pick out - it washes away.

I've used paper for quilting patterns a lot. I just used up some old notebook paper I had lying around. Any little bits of paper left behind come out in the wash.

I've used the paper by Golden Threads and I've used Press 'n Seal. Both work well.

I currently do it with tracing paper, seems to work fine. Have also used a paper vellum product for a quilt class, but think it'd might be pricey to use it on large work.

I think I have some Sulky Solvy left over from y6ears ago. Think I will give it a go. I'm going to be quilting a name into the border of the quilt & wanted something to follow so when I'm done you can actually read it. :)

I tested it out with computer paper. I printed out her name with a fancy script font & traced it with my needle & peeled the paper away. As long as I go slow enough & am fairly accurate...it looks nice! I'll post a pix later when I actually attempt to finish it on the quilt.

I thought I was being clever by spritzing the paper hearts with water before I tore them thinking it would be easier to remove. Easier to tear, but made more of a mess. The fibers under the threads just shredded, so now I have "white" hearts sewn in red thread on a black background. I'm hoping that washing will remove most of it.

Otherwise, my stitching looks decent.
