Glazing Kitchen Cabinets

I just bought a house and the kitchen cabinets are only 6 yrs. old and in really good condition, I just really hate the color, and my husband won't let me paint them, and i don't want to completely stain them. They are red oak and i'm so tired of red oak it's rediculous! So, i want to glaze them and the kid @ Home depot told me not to remove the finish and to just glaze over it and not use a finish at the end. None of that sounds right to me in my past experience in working with wood, stains, and finishes. Is there anyone who could give me a start to finish overview of the best way to do the project, or a good resource to learn how to do it? Also, I've been told that I don't need to sand them to remove the finish and to just use the Mr. Clean erasers to remove the finish. Any thoughts?
